Genuine Hudson Woody ???
Am in contact with a gent who says he has the remains of a Hudson woody built at Ypsilanti, Mich., { he is not offering to sell it } It is my understanding, right or wrong, that Hudson never built a woody. Yes I saw the one at Auburn, nice job but not by Hudson. Were there any prototypes built ? Any chance one escaped to the public ? Bud

True, Hudson did not build a woody in the step-down series, however, they did market woodies thru the 1930's and early 1940's. These bodies were built by several different manufacturers over thye years.

If it was a genuine Hudson woody built in Ypsilanti, Jack Miller (at the Ypsilanti Heritage museum / Miller Motors) will know ALL about it! You or the gent could contact him.0

Bud, I believe when Hudson needed wood bodies for their Hudson and Terraplane lines they were ordered from Cantrell. No wood body construction was performed in Detroit.0 -
Station wagon bodies were suppled by various builders.
1936 - Baker-Raulang
1937 thru 1939 - U. S. Body & Forging
1942 - Cantrell
I'm not sure where the above had their shops - but I don't think any were in Ypsilanti. I know Cantrell was located on Long Island and I think Baker-Raulang was in Cleveland, but not sure about that. There is an excellent website about the custom coach builders, but U. S. Body and Forging is not listed, nor does a Google search turn up anything.
Cantrell also offered a custom built "depot" wagon on the Terraplane chassis in 1934.
Between 1936 and 1938 station wagon bodies, it is my understanding, were only offered on Terraplane models - I beleive because Hudson considered them to be commercial models.
I have no listings for Hudson bodied station wagons for 1939 or 1940, but do have them listed for 1941 and 1942

Here is a picture of a '46 Woody.
This photo is from the 1986 May/June issue of WTN. The caption states that six Super series Station Wagons were built in 1946 for factory use in transporting assembly line drivers back to the factory from the storage and shipping terminal.0 -
'46 woodies would have been easy for the factory to have a few examples built. Simply take the '42 models and put 46 front clips on them.
The factory did the same thing around 1924 with an Essex pickup truck or two, for factory use in hauling parts around the place.
