Steering wheel parts
Hi everyone...I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I am trying to put together a complete steering wheel from a 53 superwasp which has the same wheel as a hornet I believe. It has the button that you pry off and a horn ring. Anyways It is missing a few components for the horn and I'm not sure what all is missing. Does any one have an exploded view of an assembly?
What I don't have for sure is the actual button with the wire that goes down the column and out the bottom of the steering box. Is there also a spring in there?

Any I've messed with on other cars had a spring to keep it in contact. Have had to improvise a few times makeing peices to keep it insulated from plastic scrap, spring from hdwr str, single pig tail from auto parts or junk light,etc. once used a spring from an old ball point pen. Bud0

jim im in the process of restoring a 53 super wasp and car is complely dismanteled and will working on it late this week can take a look at my parts and get a picture of parts. i beleive its the tpye alredy mentioned in an other thread

Looking at mine. There is a brass contact button which rests on top of a 5/16" long insulator (bakelite?) that has a lip about 3/8" in dia. , followed by a rubber sleeve to hold the insulator against the contact button. A roughly 3/4" long coil spring goes over the rubber sleeve so that it will press on the back of the insulator lip. This spring is tapered so that the narrow end, which fits against the lip, has only a slightly larger diameter than the rubber sleeve and insulator. The other end is larger to rest on a perch in the steering shaft. The wire connected to the button is insulated in black fabric (it is a ground wire) and connects into the horn wiring circuit by a bullet. The wire and bullet pass through the steering sector. There is a second rubber sleeve on the wire which may rest at the point where the wire exits the sector to prevent wear. Dunno, as I haven't installed my replacement as yet.
Hudzilla can furnish parts or a made up harness.

sounds like I am missing all of these components you mentioned. All I have is the round plastic piece with another metal piece on top with a metal bar that goes thru the slots.
Has anyone got the parts for sale that Walt mentioned?

The above illistration is of the '53 - '54 jet wheel assembly, and may not apply totally to the deluxe wheel from the large series car.

thanks Mars 55, this is not quite the same as my wheel. My wheel has 3 spokes and the horn ring is under the steering wheel with a push on button on top. If you had a picture of it we'd be on the right track.

well an update on this. I found a wire with the brass button on the end and a spring so I think I may have all the parts needed but don't know how it all fits together. Can any one send me a diagram of how it all fits??

um...OK...does any one have a picture thay could take of their steering wheel with the horn button removed?? I really need help with this!!

Jim,
The large end of the spring rests against the end of the steering shaft (or face of the nut which holds the steering wheel on the shaft). On my '51 Hornet, there is a small lip made by the nut being slightly raised above the shaft into which the spring fits, where it rests on the end of the shaft. The opposite small end of the spring pushes against the insulating washer which supports the brass button (end ) of the wire that connects into the horn wiring under the hood. That button is held down against the spring by a convex brass/copper strip which mounts into the steering wheel center. Ths is directly under the removable center piece with the plastic Hudson crest. The wire and rubber sleave which helps line up the button pass through the spring and down into the steering column. Will email you a photo of wiring arrangement tomorrow. thanks Walt , a photo will help immensely. I think I have all the parts except maybe whatever keeps the wire from sliding down the shaft.
