Gabriel Shocks

Hi everyone.

I see that Gabriel has a 20% mail in rebate through April 26th when you buy four shocks. I'm looking for some for our '54 Hornet and I've got a few questions.

After reading through some old posts, I'm a little confused about Gabriel part numbers. There's an 82026 that I think is a regular shock for the front, an 82028 which I think is a gas shock for the front. I've seen both an 82154 and an 82060 which I think are regular shocks for the rear and an 81147 which I think is a gas shock for the rear.

Anyone who has Gabriel's on your stepdown, please fill me in about your experience (gas vs regular shocks) and which are the correct numbers.

Thanks very much

    Front, Gas 82028, Reg 82026

    Rear, Gas 81147, Reg 82154

I have the gas on the 49 Commadore running 215 R15 Radials on standard rims. I have about 3000 mi on this combo.

Handles nice on the road, but the ride is harsh on secondary roads and in town. I don't know whether it's the radials or the shocks. I'm gonna replace the shocks with regulars and try that, and probably get a set of Goodyear WW 710 15s

I'm hearing too many blown rim stories. I put a lot of miles years ago on a 49 with Goodyear supercushions with great roadability...and the shocks were probably worn out.

I'll put the gas shocks on the Hornet which is running Sears WW 760 15s

See the 49 next year at the Nat and I'll tell ya how it's going.

Thanks for the info on the shocks.

I see now that Monroe has a "buy 3, get 1 free" deal going on. I've heard that the 5751 SensaTracs for the front and the 31094's on the rear are their best combo. Do you have any experience with those?

For those who want pick their own shocks, Monroe offers a PDF with dimensions and mounting for all their shocks. Click on the link, then click on "Mounting and Length Sheets".

  • Hi Hudson Dave here . I have been In the business for more years then I can remember . My advice to you is DO NOT BUY GABRIEL SHOCKS . They ride so hard they will beat your car to pieces . Monroe Sen Sa Tracs are the best out there . To give you some insight about the gas shocks they are a hydraulic ten stage shock that ride softly at a normal right hight , Then the further you extend them the more resistance they have . From normal ride hight the more you compress them the more resistance you get . which means a better ride, control in turns and stopping . Now as I said this Is a full hydraulic shock , When a shock goes down the road under normal operation It creates bubbles  which decreases the shocks efficiency . So they gas pressurize the shock to pop the bubbles returning the bubbles to oil . :) With out gas the shock gets foamy and dosn't work to there full capacity . and that is my two cents worth Hudson Dave
  • I think the Gabriel shocks ride a bit "hard" on the back roads. I think they seem to have a tendancy to somewhat bottom out, if that makes sense. I would argue that the old and worn out shocks I replaced, were either as good, or better.

go with the Monroe, and report back...

So Dave, what do you recommend for the front and back of our stepdowns?
