    Talk about clean Sweep...

Three Hudsons went to the Drag Strip then each proceded to 'Rough up' their competition.... (Read Results below)

Just think about that accomplishment years after Hudson stopped building Hornets with only their own ingenuity to work within the 'stock' rulebook paremeters to Win each Class.....

The late Sloan McCauley, Owner/Driver of the NHRA Record Holder Hudson Jet (13.2 @ 103 MPH) currently in Don Gartlis Museum

used to write Monthly Racing Tips for the North Texas Hudson Chapter called 'Pit Stop'. Quoting excerpts,

One such Tip was to help prevent crankshaft breakage when Racing by grinding a better radius on #6 Rod Journal 3/32" - 1/8"

and better yet, radius all the Journals.

Additionally, Sloan also recommended taking a '55-'56 'double pully' Damper,

filling the unused pully with Lead then machine a 1" steel Ring to fit over the pulley(with lead) then pin or bolt the Ring onto the pulley.

Sloane recommended 'double plating' the back side then machine the outter plate for seal clearance and balance the Unit before installing.

Sloane's theory was increasing Damper Balancer weight smoothed out the 'inherent Harmonics' enabling higher RPM preventing

crank breakage... Apparently Sloan's therory worked well.... Ps: Sloan Won this Match Race against the Army!

Interesting Info regarding Hudson NHRA Drag Racing

... How many knew that the large Sanctioning Body NHRA actually Banned the Hornet Powered Jets and required all Hudson's to use smaller Camshafts because of numerous complaints by the V8 Competition being regularly beaten by an obsolete Brand 6 cyl Car?..

Ike Smith said 'The last Straw' was when a lady driving a Jet beat the hottest Ford on the West Coast...(Pictured)

Then At the next NHRA Event, Ike Smith had to cut open his Headliner to prove that he had no Lead attached... At that Point1968 Hudson's could no longer use the 311040 Factory Cam which killed the power and Ended Hudson's Drag Racing efforts. Going forward Hudson in any NHRA Stock Class had to run the 145 Hp Cam... Ike had a number of Customers wanting Hornet Powered Jets which fizzed because of NHRA's Decision......

Ike also said he tried litigation against NHRA that resulted in NHRA makes the Rules and if you want to race you abide by their Rules

(Ie: You play in our Ballpark with our Ball or you go home)

Personally, I was suprised learning of this behavior from a large Sanction Body but a similar thing happened to us stock car racing at a local level because of constantly winning against the V8's brought complaints about cheating... The Speedway first made us go to one Carb, then when we still won, they made us drop to the 262 Motor, which also won by lowering the gears, etc.... Eventually we were banned completely so switched to racing Super Late Models...... The powerful Hornet's sure brought controversy but all Yesterdays News!

Ike Smith's Hornet Jet had a 'great day' back in '65 according to this Drag Illustrated article.

Its difficult to read but in the Final Street Eliminator with 14 Entries, Ike sent back to the Pits a B/G Chevy, a CM/P '58 Vette, a'40 Willys pickup

(that ran 11.3 @ 125 earlier) enroute to the Win at Fontana Carlsbad.....
    ....

Anyone currently racing a Jet ?
