Hey little Terraplane, don'ch know yer gonna shut'm down!

:)I've been promising the results of the splitting of the manifold to run duels to all you guys thinking of doing it, for sometime now, and I finally got the old '36 Plane back on the road.

She sounds really nice. I running duel Smithys (old school glasspaks). Has a smooth rumble without being too obnoxious. The sound from inside the car is not a lot louder, just a low hum 'til ya step on it.
She runs a LOT better than she did before I started the work a couple of months ago, but I gotta give it to you straight.
I have only had the car since August, and I went through the engine. Several head studs were broken so I removed the heads checked the cylinder walls for wear, and replaced all the bad studs. Replaced the gaskets including the oil pan crud, rebuilt the carb (man is was a mess) put in the correct plugs (the wrong ones were in it) replace the points and regapped them (the gap was too open).
So you can see there were all kinds of reasons why it should run better than it did (man, I didn't think it was running THAT bad, just show you how tough and resilient these ole gals are) and it does.
I don't know how to tell you how much more horsepower it has or anything, but it has a LOT more pep and I'd guess it runs at least 10-15 percent stronger.

I have lots of pictures of the new manifold, the exhaust piping and mufflers under the car, and of the newly painted engine with two outlets comming off the manifold if anyone wants more info. Feel free to send me private messages and I will get back to you. slim

How accessible is the distributor with this setup?0
-
I'm glad you asked this question as it was one I meant to address. I placed the downturn in the only position that I could see would work with the distributor. But this is the one drawback. There IS enough room to get my hand down and turn it and tighten the bolt with an extention, but it is tight. The problem is when the the engine has been running and the manifold is hot. I just had to wait for it to cool. To change the points I just removed the distributor as it would be close to impossible to do otherwise. slim:(0

Slim, I talked to the guy who did your manifold at the Street Rod Nats in OKC last weekend, the guy from Texas. He showed me a couple of pics of your manifold - looks great! I'm thinking very seriously about doing the same to my '37 Brougham, even running the same Smithy's mufflers! Can you post a .wav file of how your car sounds???0

I could live with that. Slim. that thing just screams "C'mon, lets go for a spin ". Mighty fine little ride. Bud0

Snake,
I think the location we chose is the best one. Any direction left or right, would just make it tougher.
Small consolation for the benefit, in my opinion....slim0 -
