pusher fan

I am looking for a 6 volt pusher fan to mount in front of my radiator. I have found some but they are 12 volt. I need this for my 40 hudson. I noticed last summer driving in the NM desert that the temp. gauge would go between normal and hot. I would like to get one before I drive to Alb. in June.

Thanks for any help you you can give me

Cheers, Hudson 40

I have one waiting to go on my '47 C8, from Vintage Air. It was bought some years ago, so don't know if they still offer them. My main problem is keeping it cool when at or near idle for an extended period, such as in "parade duty." In any other circumstances it doesn't overheat at all.

At highway speed, I can't imagine a fan helping to cool any significant amount.

Nope but in stop n go traffic you'd be glad to have it. There's a company...advertises through Hemmings...darn can't think of the name of it but they sell 6 and 12V electric fans and alternator brackets for older cars.

Also... if you've done the normal things, thermostat, radiator, etc. ... You may want to bust out the water jacket caps on your engine block and flush them out with a powerful power washer and then replace them...if that engine has never been rebuilt or that was never done...you'd be amazed at what sludge would come out of the block leading to inefficient cooling....and I'd seen them so gunked up that no amount of cooling system flush would dislodge it!!! Remember there's only like 7 lbs of pressure going through those old cooling systems.
  • 6 VOLT radiator fans are available from Scotts Cooling Fans @ 1 800 272 3267. About $150 the ship fast..

They don't have a WEBSITE yet. They used to be in Ca. but have moved to new england. He said they adv. in Hemmings.

Hudson 40, I installed one on the front of the radiator and the fan blads and the Flat-Pancake Motor blocked most of the air flow. ( still ran hot )

After talking with the supplier they said that a sucker-fan would cool better as it still lets all the air flow through the fins. The motor and blades do not block the air flow.

I installed a Sucker fan on the inside of the Radiator wouthout the Reg. fan blades and it cooled it down 13 deg.

    Hope this helps. Rudy

Are you saying you did not keep the OEM fan on the water pump and installed a puller fan on the radiator instead?

Was is it 6v ro 12v? What was the flow rate of the fan? Are there any measurable HP gains by using this method? Any power problems with 6v by adding this fan to the system?
  • Why wouldn't a fan shroud work as well? It seems putting something in front of the shroud would restrict the air flow also.

Pacemaker, mine is 12-volt,and i do not run the Factory fan blade.

My Fan is turned on by a sensor-probe that is inserted into the top row rad.tube and the fan comes on at 170 deg. Also the fan comes on when the Air Cond.compressor is on. ( no fan shroud is needed )

The 46 Radiator has the late-style core that uses 3-rows and the fins are of the Lovered type with the orig.top and lower tanks. With the outside temp of 100 deg. and Air Cond. on the temp stays between 175-185 Thats with the Turbocharger on.

    Thanks Rudy
  • Fellas, I use a product called Water wetter in my race engine. It drops the temperture approx. 10 to 13 degrees. I don't see why it wouldn't work in a Hudson 6 or 8 or any engine that runs a little hot. It's also a lube as well as a temp. reducer. Compatable with water or anti freeze. I have to use water for coolant so I make sure its distilled. I didn't think it would work ,but believe me, it does. Pep boys, auto zone, etc. carries it.
  • I did the same as '41 hud'. My Jet always ran too hot, so I switched to straight distilled water and Water Wetter. It dropped the temp almost 20 degrees. Don't take my advice if you live in a place where it drops below freezing.
  • Fellas;

Thank for all the input on the pusher fan. Now I'm not sure what direction I want to go. I will have to think about it ,before I invest my money. For sure I will look into the "wetter water" Thanks again. Hope to see you all in Alb. in June
  • Water Wetter can be added to "regular" radiator fluid mixes and still be effective.

I have it in all my other vehicles due to all the Alleghenie Mountains and asundry hills we have here. LOTS OF CLIMBING
