I just bought a conny kit for my jet from Dale Cooper, (thanks Dale!):) It is all there but the flat cover that covers the wheel. Does anybody know where I can get one, or is there one avalible from the places that sell stuff for Vans??

Thanks, Barry Smedley:confused:

    Barry,

I'm not sure about this, but I think the original cover had a hole in it to allow the use of a hub cap. I think the solid cover looks better and allows for some custom lettering or graphics. No doubt a solid cover could be purchased from a van customizer. JC Whitney used to sell them, maybe still do. They come in many sizes, some are steel, some are molded plastic. Just make sure you get the correct diameter.

Barry - The tire carrier is designed a little differently than most. the wheel is attached to the back side of the bracket, so you will need a cover with a hole in the center - also, the hub cap which they used had a release button in the middle (where the triangle would be) to push to release the spare tire and lean it back for access to the trunk. After reading this , it is prbably as clear as mud. Wish I had some pictures to include.

Original cap is very hard to fiund! It has 15/16" hole in center for release buttion. You can take a Jet cap and put hole in center as shown in third picture. Here are pictures of original and Jet cap with hole. Help this helps.:)
  • Thanks guys! A freind of mine took a hub cap and used an extra door push button and it worked great. Maybe I can find some kind of plate and modify it to fit.

    Thanks, Barry Smedley
  • I think I said that wrong, The center cap is not the problem, it is the plate that covers the tire it self, I have the ring that goes around but not the flat piece, The center cap is not a problem.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  • If you go to the Hudson Picture posting site that Jon set up... there is a picture of a complete Jet Continental kit disassembled and off the car.
  • Here is the picture...It is installed on a Jet now as it was sold.

    FYI

If you do want a fiberglass cover afterall I have seen them at RV Stores and at Swap Meets. The RV Store can order one from their Counter Catalog...
  • Guess who. I'll probably be at your house when you get home. JR. Kirtley used to work at an RV place for several years. He might help you out. Buck

Here's a few more pics to go off of. Out of curiousity, what made you decide to add the continental kit? Being short :o, I don't plan on adding one. I'd never be able to reach anything in the trunk! LOL
  • Just curious, what is the going rate for a kit?
  • Complete Jet Kit $500+ Full size Hudson probably alot more

The original hubcap for the kit we put on our Hollywood was beyond repair/use. One day, a friend of ours from the Studebaker club saw it and commented that the cap looked like a Studebaker cap, minus the center hole. My brother Corky told him if he could find one, we'd love to have it. He picked up one at the Studebaker nationals that year and brought it to us. Corky had the center hole cut and put it on the car:

There Are 3 Rings In My Drive Way I Also Have A Compleet 55,56,57 Kit For $50 If Any Ones Looking For One
  • I just aquired a Jet with a continental kit on it, it's got plenty of surface rust but no rust through and only a few minor dents. It's all there except the hubcap. I have no use for it and would like to sell it to put money back in the engine rebuild kitty. If anyone is interested please contact me at: 580-379-4162 or e-mail at: thomas.richter@sbcglobal.net.

I had to revive this old thread when I came across this exploded view of a continental kit tire mount!

I do have an extra conny kit, some of the parts are missing though.

  • In high school I used to cut yards for money to spend and the only vehicle was my Mother's 54 Jet with continental kit. So I put my push mower in the trunk with the kit down and just let it and the trunk lid bounce on the bumps. I should had been more careful, but I did paint the car later and quit using it when I made a trailer for my motor scooter. 45 mph first, 80 second, 110 high. Never burned a clutch. Mom taught 3 teenagers to drive in that car. Bob
  • I would be willing to sell the incomplete kit, The only thing that is missing is the flat ring that goes on the front of the tire. And the light is a little beat up, but usable.

Yep, I still have it. It is a Yankee, NOS and period correct still in the box. I bought it off ebay a few months ago and then realized the Jet convertible had a different type.
