1941-47 Battery Recommendations?
A friend is replacing the battery in his '41 Super Six. As you know, these take a "lower" battery (a 2L) than the standard Group 1 or 2, since otherwise the hood will slam right down on the battery terminals.
He's only found one or two batteries that will work with this car, and they're both over $200. They're made by Antique Auto Battery and New Castle Auto Battery.
He currently has an Interstate, which barely fits (he puts a rubber spacer between the top of the terminal and the hood, to prevent electrical contact).
He's thinking of going back to this (it's only about $90) but I wondered if anyone has any other recommendations for a new battery that's reasonably priced and will fit?

Jon: I use an Optima in a fake case in my '40. (Exactly the same spacing as the '41.) I can't say enough good things about Optima batteries...they really crank the 6-volt starter motor and last at least twice as long as regular batteries. :cool:0

I have been able to find 2L batteries at the local farm supply store, as quite a few of the old farm tractors used that type. The last one I bought (a couple of years ago) was less than $ 60.00

SamJ is right. Optimas will outlast some cars. They seem to last forever. We run a 6V Optima in our club's '30 Chevy firetruck. It only gets driven once a year in the July 4th parade usually. And sits in cold storage all winter, and we get down to -20F in the winters. It'll still start up w/out jumping each July 4th. I'd recommend that route.0

Jetman, could you please give me the make of the battery and the name of the store (if it's a chain)? I've searched the internet in vain for any sort of 2L battery except for the ones I mentioned!
Sam and Willly -- I'm just curious. When you say the Optimas outlast the others, can you give me hard figures? What's the longest you've had a working Optima? Maybe I can "sell" this guy on buying a $130 (?) Optima over a $90 "regular" battery, if I can show him it's cheaper in the long run.0 -
Well, I installed a Optima battery in my Jeep Cherokee in Nov. 2001 and it's still going strong. It is a vehicle that is used for 4-wheeling. Other batteries would breakup under this useage. Tractor Supply Company sells 6 volt batteries and they list the dimensions.

Okay, I went to that site but didn't see anything that seemed "right". The battery must be less than 9 inches high (as I see it) in order not to contact the hood. The only thing close in size was this one http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_33897_-1______?rFlag=true&cFlag=1 but it's listed as "1.6 volts" and that ain't gonna work at all!0

I would inquire at Tractor Supply about that voltage. I think it is a typo.0 -
Using the same set up as Sam in my 53. Best battery I have ever used in a Hudson ... including the 8 volt and two voltage batteries I used to use.
Good Luck0 -
Jon, I Believe The Group Size That Replaces The 2 L Is Now Called A 19 L. The Napa # Should Be 5019 L, If My Memory Serves Me Right.

Thanks, guys, for all of this valuable information. He's calling around town this morning to see what's available!

The oldest one I have is only 5 years old, and no problems. My buddy owns a trucking business, and collectively puts on about 2,500 miles a day on his 8 or so vehicles...he swears by Optima batteries. Also, I was talkin' with a fellow at Costco a few months ago, and he said the Optima he had bought something like 14 years prior was still running. Finally, my buddy unknowingly snapped one of the alternator wires off his '63 Studebaker Champ a while back, and didn't know it but the battery wasn't charging after that. He drove around town for two weeks on that battery, and even took it out once to winch a vehicle onto and then back off a car trailer. Then, he put it back in the Champ and the next morning we started out in the dark on a 2,300 mile round trip to Kansas for the antique truck show. Anyway, we made it about 70 miles with the lights on before the battery wouldn't start when we stopped for gas (and that was after two weeks of driving around town and using the battery for the winch). This just happened a few weeks ago. We were sure impressed.0 -
Thanks, John, for the heads-up on the 5019L. My friend ordered his today, from NAPA and it should be in tomorrow. At 440 CCA it's not exactly Optima-strong, but we'll see how it works out.
Thanks again to one and all for the helpful ideas!0 -
If Everything Is Up To Snuff, It Should Work Fine. The Cca Will Probably be Higher Than That. Have Them Test It Before You Leave The Store.
