Is there a resource for understanding the serial numbers on the step downs?

I have a 1948 super 6 4 door.



The tag on the door post reads 48133099



The stamp on the block reads 48133C99 (note the "C" in stead of the "0" - both are clear so I don't think its a bad stamping)



Other cast in stamps on the block are:

268 (left of the fuel pump)



and under the distributor is:

A28

300001

CWC

1



The head is stamped with: 301766 and 847 near the firewall with no other markings.



Do any of these cast numbers mean anything other than the original casting?



The engine also has a 1GS model distributor. Is this the correct style for a '48?



I assume, from the numbers, that the block is original. Is there a way to tell if it has its original head? The engine is red (I believe it should be silver). It also has a steel tube heater line up from the pump and down the length of the head in lieu of full length hoses. I always thought that this was a later setup ('51 and newer?) or do I have backwards or just plain wrong?



Any info would be appreciated, just curious about what I've got and any history.

    You have a 1948 Super Six. The first three numbers of the VIN give the year and model. In your case, the first two numbers are the year (48) and third number is the model number. The model numbers are "1" a Super Six, "2" Commodore Six, "3" Super Eight and "4" Commodore Eight. This numbering scheme was only used on '48 to '50 Hudsons. Other year Hudsons used different numbering schemes. Engine number "C" is a mis-stamping for a "0". The engine number is the same as the serial number. The 1GS model distributor is the correct style for a '48.

    I agree, the stamping was defective. Perhaps the stamp was chipped? Another possiblility is that the engine has been replaced and re-stamped. I also think the metal tube was a later innovation.

    From a chart in my General Information Handbook, I can tell you that your car was built in March 1948 (s/n's 32375-45032)

    The distributor number should be IGS-4213A-1 -1948-1950 exc. Pacemaker

    Starter number: MCL-6006 - 1948-1950 exc. Pacemaker

    Generator: GEC-4801S - 1940-1949 all, exc 40, 48, 10, 18, 20, 28;

    RegulatorP VRR-4001A - 1940-1949 all with GEC generator

    Ignition Coil: CR-6006 - 1948-1949 all
