Oil pump re-install on a 49 super six

Hi!
Need some opinions/feedback. I lined up the timing marks and pulled out the oil pump to check condition of the drive gear. Good news is that the bronze gear was replaced when the engine was rebuilt by the last owner and is in good shape.
Do I need to pack the oil pump with something to insure that it primes from the pan/intake? The shop manual is silent on that issue as far as I can see. Several people who work on engines and a friend who has rebuilt several antique car and tractor engines recommend packing the pump. I've had petroleum jelly recommended to me and a couple of people said Lubriplate 105 would be good to pack the pump.
If I pack the pump do I need to change the oil right after? The oil was fresh before I put the car away last fall and has almost no running time on it. If what I pack the pump with will pass through the oil passages I wouldn't think there would be any harm in running the oil awhile before replacing it.
I have Rudy Bennett's Nitrile pump cover gasket to install on the pump after I inspect it. Any other hints or recommendations on the re-install process.

Drew,
It sounds to me like you're on the right track. I know that Vaseline will work fine, I've used it several times at start-up of a new engine or oil pump. Since you're actually only putting a very small amount in the oil pump, I doubt it's going to have any significant effect on the 7-8 quarts in the system. You may want to still change the oil based on it's age since the last change, but that's your call. I also use Rudy's nitrile seal with excellent results. Good Luck0 -
i have never packed a pump after removal in re installation. just fill it with the same motor oil that is in the engine. i would be afraid that packing with aything elsle might impede flow, BILL ALBRIGHT, KEEP AN EYE ON OIL PRESSURE LIGHT AFTER FIREING UP YOU WILL BE PLEASED TO SEE ILT GO OUT0

Thank you both for the information. I think I have what I need to finish this item on my list of to do's. I hope to make some good progress this weekend. Bill I usually pull the plugs, disconnect the coil primary and crank the engine to comfim the oil pressure light goes out before I start it. No harm in this is there?

To add to what's already been suggested, I'd change the oil at the beginning of every season or end. all engine oils after setting for extended periods will oxidize somewhat. There a long list of reasons, such as after shutting engine off at the end of season and sitting, condensated moisture mixes with oil vapors and creates acid hydrolisys, which will weaken bearing surfaces.. Another, additive package begins to drop out along with contaminents after awhile and oil may look pretty clear. I was amazed at the amount of sludge in the bottom of my 52k mile 254 oil pan.
When I get it going again, I'll will probably pull pan every other year and inspect and clean both pans.
It may be overkill, but the value we place in our cherished toys, warrants the best we can do for them. We've spent a ton on them, why scrimp on its life blood, oil.
Thanks for letting me share,
Kim0
