Shipping wire wheels for restoration
I decided I'd better get my wire wheels out to Dayton Wheel for restoration pretty soon, so they'd be ready for the '53 Convert, as soon as that project gets under way.
Dayton is a fair way from my home though, so I knew I'd need a way to ship them, all in one box so nothing could go astray, and as damage proof as possible.
After some deliberation, this is the solution I came up with.
Maybe someone else attempting the same project can get a few ideas from these pics. Materials are just some 2X4's, a few short 1X4's, and some 3/8 plywood. Deck screws hold it all together.
Shipping weight --- 205 Lbs.

Great Shipping container. I recently purchased a set and they were shipped via UPS GRD in Cardboard containers. The Boxes were double wall with shredded paper. Two wheels per box with heavy cardboard between the wheels. No damage experienced and the boxes did not appear to be damaged. Like your method better.0

Nice Work!
The only thing I would add is steel strapping x-ways - or even shrink wrapping just in case some of the wood/screws split it would kinda keep it "glued" it together should something happen in transport.0 -

Yes, the straps would have been a good idea Dan, but I didn't have a banding machine, so that would have been out. I thought of glue for the joints, but the Guy at the other end trying to get the wheels "out" of the box probably wouldn't appreciate that effort too much. :-)
They'll probably send them back in cardboard boxes anyway, but at least they'll get them at the factory all at the same time and in as good a condition as they were when I still had them here. ( I hope ).
The reason for all this extra effort to ship them, is because when I ordered a set of five Diamondback radial tires a couple years ago, they were shrink wrapped in two pairs of two, with one wrapped single, for a total of three packages. All five tires were shipped out same day, same truck. However, when they arrived here a couple weeks later, only the four wrapped in pairs showed up! The other single wrapped one went off to Timbuktu or some such place and after an extensive search, and a lot of shoulder shrugging, finally showed up three weeks later!! Good thing I didn't have a show to attend while I was waiting for that last one !!
While I knew I could always order another one if it never showed up in that case, -- where the heck am I going to find one original lip-laced Hudson wire wheel to replace it if one of them goes missing ? The Thunderbird ones you can buy at the local tire store just aren't built the same as the originals, even though they are lip-laced -- they have too many spokes !
That's why they're all in one box, and insured for five grand !! I hope the end result will be worth the effort. I'll add a pic or two of the wheels when they come back, so we can see what kind of work Dayton Wheel does. They will have stainless spokes instead of the stock chrome ones, but hopefully this will help keep them pristine for the next dozen owners over a few hundred years!
