confused about engine number

I thought my dad's 54 hornet had a 308 with a 262 head. But after reading on this forum about the rib over the oil pan of the 308 apparently it is a 262 engine. The number stamped vertically on the block in front of exhaust manifold is 8153765. The 8 is what confuses me.

Actually the whole number is confusing for 1954 - serial numbers in '54 started at 269060 and ran to 319720.

There are only two years that fit that number - (by production)

    1949 - 145765-156206 (Sep 1949)

    1952 - 152065-160796 (Mar 1952)

Unfortunately, we don't have a breakdown as to what numbers fit what engines.

Serial numbers in 1948, 1950 and 1951 don't go that high and as I pointed out above 1954 numbers start in the 200,000 range. Numbers in 1949 start at 101 and go to 159201; in 1952 from 132916 to 202916.

  • Thanks Alex. I'm thinking if you leave off the 8 the number would be for a motor out of a 52. The serial number inside the door is 296221
