I know that these are an extremely rare item. I would like to find a pair for my 1936 T sedan, they were an option for my car. Does anyone know where a pair of these might be found???

I hope you will be able to find a pair, and can put a photo on this site. I also have a 36T, and havent seen the lights before. Thanks, Barry

Richard, I was in England a few weeks ago, and while there attended a big (for them) automotive flea market event. I noted several of this general type of parking light there; most were new production, and a couple types looked very much like the original Hudson ones. That wouldn't be a bad alternative. The challenge would be getting someone there to help track down the manufacturers or sellers.

Being UK based I'd be happy to have a scout around. Is there a good reference picture I could use at all?

Park, perhaps someone in ROC? They have a "spares" man who is quite diligent.

Have you tried this fellow? http://www.classicaccessories.org/

As I recall, those '36 fender lights looked like a number of other cars' fender lights at the time and maybe you could find a "placeholder" until the real thing comes along. For example....

    Jon,

Yes, I have had some nice conversations with these guys in Santa Barbara. You will notice that all of the lights that you have listed all have a rim. Hudson was one of the only cars that used "rimless" headlights and the parking lights matched. I am posting a picture of one here.

Park, the trouble with most of the English fender lights is that they also have a rim. I checked out Buzz Stahl's Railton today and it has rimmed fender lights.

Those folks over at the C.M. Hall light company had this "thing" for rimless lights with lenses that pushed in at the bottom and flipped out at the top. A form of sadism towards Hudson owners, if you ask me. But it had the advantage of increasing the demand for replacement lenses from the manufacturer.

Incidentally, Roy Lassen, who helps run the classic accessories shop, once sold antique cars in Orange, Connecticut back in the 70's. Back in 1970 I looked at a '35 Dodge convertible he had for sale for $500, but decided against buying it. A year later I finally opted to spend $500 on a Terraplane in New Hampshire, and it's been all downhill since then...

Jon, I didn't know this history about Roy Lassen until I visited Carl Webber last week on a trip to Cape Cod. I had a great visit with Carl, viewed his massive stash of Hudson parts & memoribilia and his museum, I also bought some choice parts for my '36T. He filled me in on Roy Lassen and a story about a Hudson that Pete Booz ended up towbarring to CA behind some little car that he and Nancy were driving, I can't remember all of the details. I have yet to meet Roy, I had an appointment with him over Father's Day weekend as I was in Ventura visiting my kids & grandkids, but he had to cancel at the last minute. I do have an offer of a light to use if we want to try to reproduce them, however I am still hoping to find a pair. There are lots of them around, but unfortunately all attached to someone's Hudson!!

Paul, I saw those similar lights at the Beaulieu "Autojumble" near Southampton. I note they run this event in September as well as May.

Richard, if you insist on having rimless ones, you deserve to have as long a search as I did for those critters! LOL.

Park, I plan to seriously explore having some made. I have a line on a guy who does metal spinning here in Escondido. I know where to get the bases cast and I have the promise of one to use as a pattern if I can go this route. They seem to be real rare items and were used on '34 - '36H & T so maybe there is a market for them to be made. I will report on my progress.

..and if you can obtain an original glass lens, there are places that will cast new ones for you in genuine plastic!!!

Then you will have the exclusive privilege of listing them on my Hudson Repro Site! http://mysite.verizon.net/detailed1/Repro_Table.pdf

Actually the lenses for these are carried by K-Gap, in plastic!

Is it just me, or are those lamps (on the N.Z. bid site) actually taillights for a Chrysler product?

Yes Jon, upon closer inspection it is clear that these are tail lights, not fender lights. I doubt that they would do me any good.
  • What you need are Delta Silver Ray lights. They are nicer than any of those pictured and not that hard to find. They were used on balloon tire bicycles from about 1934 to 1938. I first saw these almost 20 years ago on a 1936 Hudson and just assumed they had been robbed off of a bicycle. The owner told me they were a Hudson option. I guess they were used on both. Even the voltage is the same, the bicycles used 4 D cells to get 6 volts, bike used two wires and the car used one. Base is 4-1/2" long (slightly curved). Light is 4" long. Bezel is 2-1/4" wide. Glass lense is 1-3/4" wide. They came with clear or amber lenses, amber being much harder to find. They can be found among the bicycle crowd or on eBay, search "Delta Silver Ray". Expect $200 to $300 for really nice ones. Here's some pictures of Delta Silver Rays.

Interesting!! There are a couple of pairs of these on the classic accessories website that Jon references above, without attribution of course. I was wondering what they were off of. The bases are rather clumsey but the light buckets are pretty good. They might due. Thank you.
  • I know these are not the old stock ones, but I think they fit pretty good.

(Only you HET guys know for sure. Lol)

I understand they are from the 37 Chev.

Very nice '36. There are some of these fender lights at the classic accessories site also.

Those long ones are pretty close to what Hudson put on the '37s, as I recall.

These fender lights were a G.M. accessory & would be more likely to show up on a Buick where I have seen lots of them before. Close to Hudson's offering but with a chrome strip around the middle. Anyhow, they look great.
