original wire wheel finish

Can anyone tell me if the finish on the original Hudson wire wheel ('53), was paint or chrome ??

The reason I ask, is that as many of you who already know, I've sent mine out for restoration, and to this point I was assuming the finish was chrome, but after looking at the pictures of the '53 Convert. again that just sold on ebay awhile back, I'm not so sure now.

By the looks of the pictures, the finish on these looks more like silver paint.

Anybody know for sure?

    Silverone-

That was my understanding as well. Mine are going to be chrome.

I have a set of 4 chrome ones that are good for a driver and would have to be plated for show. THey need the center caps that are probably still available from K-gap. I will take $400,00 and deliver them to National if anyone wants them. I had them plated about 12 years ago and used them on my 51 convertible for 10 years before I took them off. email me if you want them. (They are the wheels in this picture)

Yes, me too. Mine were already chromed, but I began to have my doubts about authenticity after seeing the '53 wheels in the picture. Thought maybe somebody had them chromed after the fact, but no worries now. :-)

Dave, I'd be interested to know why you decided to take them off. Are the wires more "show" than "go" in the real world, or did you just want a different look after ten years ?

Chrome is coming off in a couple of places small spots of outer rim on 2 of them. I took them off because my car was show in the real world. That car was voted one of top 40 cars at St. Ignace car show of over 2800 cars. http://info.detnews.com/joyrides/story/index.cfm?id=249

I owned it for 16 1/2 years and proudly drove it as far west as Rapid City, as far north as London, Ontario, as far east as Boston and as far south as Florida. They are the original 5 inch wheels. I replaced them with 6 inch wide Wheel Vintiques wires from Corky Coker, who arranged deal for me to sell the car to Senator Howard Baker and wanted to make sure he was pleased.
