Jet - brake drum puller
I've been following this forum for quite some time and find it excellent - but this is my first post. I have a '53 Super Jet that we've had in the family since the early 60's; in fact it was my first set of wheels. Runs good and is in good shape for the most part, but I need to do a brake job. When I was quite a bit younger I was able to remove them by banging them off with a hammer and bar, but I know better now. I know I've read about the "dog bone" brake drum puller many times but didn't keep the information. I've tried a regular puller that fit the lug bolts, with a big wrench, but can't get the drums to budge. My question is would someone direct me to the tech tip article someone wrote about the use of the "dog bone" puller, or give me an idea where I could rent one. Appreciated!

I'd add a couple suggestions to Paul's excellent "article" --
1. After you give the dogbone a good whack, tap the edge of the brake drum with a hammer, all around the perimeter, to set up a vibration. Once there's tension on the puller, this vibration may actually pop the drum loose.
2. It's a good idea to leave the axle nut ON the axle, though of course you want to loosen it so there's room for the drum to move outward once it's loosened. If you don't leave the axle nut on the axle, then the force of the drum moving outward, when it finally "lets go", may cause you no little pain in the chest or stomach area (depending upon how you're positioned at the Magic Moment).0
