Test trip with my buddy

I feel great today because My buddy(see pic) and I made a 225 mile round trip. This is the first time I ventured away from town, new head gasket last week. Started out about 10:00 AM going up I-85 keeping close to the speed limit of 70. The engine temp stayed at 170 to 175 degrees all the way up to my brother's place according to my new mechanical temp gauge. We visited for a while , had lunch and started home. I had filled up at home so I could check the mileage going up and filled up again before coming back home. Got 26 MPG going up, but I didn't believe it. Checked again coming home and got the same thing. I am amazed at the mileage, does anyone else get that kind of mileage? We checked the mileage by the mile markers and the odometer both. My odometer is off 1 tenth per mile, reads .9 at a mile. The overdrive works like a charm. Anyway, the mileage is great but the important thing is I gained a bunch of confidence because the car ran like a dream. Smooth, quiet and not one problem, what a car. The ambient temp was 96 degrees on the way home and the engine temp never went above 180. This car was far ahead of its time in my opinion. He is now my buddy, I'm ready to drive anywhere. Richie.

Richie, I like your Ride, looks super good and the 2-door Sedans just look like they are lowered even more than the 4-doors.

Been driving my 51 Super 6 -2-door Sedan for 43 years now and enjoy it more and more each day. Hudsonly Rudy
  • Take 10% off of 26 to compensate for the odometer (2.6) and your actual mileage would be 23.4...still not shabby! Better than the vast majority of new cars!

Hudson always advertised that they got great fuel economy. My Pacemaker gets about 21.5 mpg I'd say. Not what anyone expects from a 50+ year old car! If you're interested in seeing what other owners have managed in fuel economy tests some old issues of the WTN have reports by members on the laughlin Economy run that the CA. chapters participate in. Also there's an old Driver's report from 1951 Popular mechanics on the Chicago Milwaukee website I posted.

Good fuel economy, Roomy, safe, good looks and good performance. Why they can't still build cars like this I'll never know.
  • Haven't checked mine on a long trip lately but, 2 years ago my '54 Hornet Special got 21 mpg on a round trip from Newport,TN to Kingsport,TN then to Charlotte, NC and back, around 700 miles total.

  • Welcome to the family, brother Ritchie. Driving one is believing.

The '49 gets 22 mpg, if you keep your foot out of the Edelbrock's seconadaries. The Wasp gets in the neighborhood of 17-19 mpg, but the engine is tired and it is running less than perfect jets/rods in the carb.

I love your car, and hope to get to see it in person - you'd better take me for a ride!

Thanks Rudy, I guess I know how you feel now. 43 years is a long time, wow!! To think what I have been missing all these years. I will enjoy every ride from now on. Richie.

66patrick66, anyway you look at it I'm happy, it's a lot better than my Plymouth flat head or my Ford 272 V8. This Hudson is an all around better car than the other two. I'm going to just enjoy it. Richie.

Aaron D, I guess you enjoy driving your Pacemaker and I am looking forward to many miles in mine. Thanks for all that info on economy, I'll check it out. I'm not really concerned about MPG, I was just very surprised at what it got. I will drive it when and where I want, just have to plan ahead for long trips. Use to be the food or lodging were the expensive items on long trips, now it seems to be fuel. The older I get the more important "HAPPY" becomes. Richie.

BJ, now that is a nice trip. My little trip was just highway, no stops and starts. If I mixed in some city traffic it would be less probably, nothing I'm going to worry about. The enjoyment outways the fuel costs. You have the Twin "H" I would assume, 21 mpg sounds pretty good to me. I have only one carb. Richie.

Thanks Mark, I am a believer, it rides like a dream. All I can hear is the wind going by at 65 mph, no engine or driveline noises. I am really surprise at what a great road car it is. The old Plymouth gets rocked when passed by an 18 wheeler doing 75 plus but the Hudson never even sways. I couldn't be happier with it. 22 mpg would be considered good I would think with all that you have done to your 49. I don't know what HP your 49 puts out, I do know it is "LOTS" more than I have. So 22 mpg is good. When my wife's schedule allows it we will be coming up to Tn. probably in Oct. to visit Don and Lisa. Maybe we can all meet, we'll work something out. I want a ride in you 49 too. Richie.
  • I hope you and Don and all can schedule the visit around the Redneck Rumble. its in Oct.

We'll for sure be there. I'm tired of being the only Hudson there, it would be nice to have another believer around.

Coatney will never defect from the mopar.

I know Don won't, and there is nothing wrong with that. I still like mine, but it is not a Hudson !!! I have found what I want, and when I find another one that Plymouth will go. I will do my best to get up to the Redneck Rumble Mark. We had a great time the last time we were there. If I remember correctly you spent toooo much time eating. Richie.
