Neils, I lived in Reno in the early '90's and my organization was a sponsor of Hot August Nights. It is a fun event. I drove my '50C6 sedan up from Escondido a couple of years, I think '98 & 2001. I was the only classic car that I saw, all Hot Rods. The town is incredibly crowded and long lines of cars for all free events and this year the swap meet has moved to Sacramento. Somehow it lost its lease with the Rodeo grounds and has been moved out. This was the outgrowth of the old Harrah's auctions. I hope that you have a good time, but you may find it a total zoo.

Will be in L. Tahoe from Aug. 1 - 8 but not sure if we're going to go "down the hill" to take any of that in (we're traveling with 2 other couples who as far as I know, have no interest in old cars/hot rods).
  • I've always wanted to go to this show but never have the time.....

Anyone interested in modified cars should do this show---ONCE!! Bring LOTS of money, have a place to stay, and enjoy the cars. Not much of a show for the STOCK, vintage-type autos, tho.

I agree with Richard E. that it has become a "Zoo", wonder what high gasoline prices, outlandish room rates and expensive food will do to the numbers. Many of the locals here, a hundred miles away from Reno, will NO LONGER drive up the hill, even for one day. Too much hassle, too many other meets locally that are more fun. I'm stayin' home. FWIW.
  • I anticipate the crowds. I think the price of gas will affect things to some degree. Not too worried about a place to stay as I'm sure I can find something farther out. I just want to walk around some of the show n shines and see some nice cars (hot rod or classic). Since chicks dig me I'll probably find a new friend ha,ha.

They also had a MAJOR gang brawl there a few years ago during the event.

What started out as a wonderful swap meet sponsored by Bill Harrah, when many car clubs, inc. the Calif. HET chapters, would meet, has degenerated into R. E.'s "zoo". We always stayed at the Nugget in Sparks as it was closest to the Museum. The swap meet became, prior to his death, 2nd only to Hershey - very clean, hot dawg & beer kiosks set up, well organized & thought out, almost free as Harrah underwrote it.

I ran into Carl Horton of Indianapolis, who had a helluva a collection, & said to him "what are you doing here" & he responded that a whole group had chartered a plane from Ind. to come to the swap meet.
  • there are people renting out their houses for the event and you basically send them on vacation---it is a cottage industry in sturgis----that way you can cook your own meals and pay alittle less than renting a room----some guys like it so well they become friends with the homeowner and go back to same place every year---bob

Pedro, the last time I was there was the time that they had the "riot." It was really blown out of proportion and was really no big deal, just drunk bikers. The City of Reno reacted very swiftly and I am sure that there won't ever be a repeat of that. They know how to deal with bad hombres in Nevada. They just take them out in brush somewhere and bleached bones are found many years later.

Neils, you really should try to get a room before you get there. Just go online and I bed you can find something. You need some place to take all of those chickies!! Try the Truckee River Inn, it is right on the river, non-smoking and may have a room.

Opps! I meant, "I bet," boy that is a freudian slip!!

I think that the ***** house outside of Sparks is now operated by the IRS. I can't remember the name of the place. (Not that I would actually know - LOL)

Opps! I guess that you can't say that word on here. I am surprised that I can say IRS!

That "place" is still there with new owners. The riot was from gang bangers from California. It won't happen again, as they will not put up with it here. Police will be in force and on horseback, and it will be a safe place to be. The swap meet will be in Reno at the same place, (the fairgrounds), and at at the same time. Only the name and sponser has changed. Only thing you might have to put up with is the smoke blown into Nevada from the California fires. Gas has gone down here 15 cents a gallon the last week to $3.89.
