I am working on a 1957 Hash, Three speed Overdrive. The solenoid blows the fuse. Does anyone have a source for a solenoid. I believe it is a Borg Warner transmission and a delco ramey solenoid.

    Have you removed the solenoid and checked it off the car? A blown fuse indicated a dead short to ground. It's fairly rare for a solenoid windings to short out, but often the coil burns out, that won't blow a fuse. If the coil windings are open it just won't work. Also,There is a good chance that the short might actually be in the wires to or at the solenoid.

    The solenoid shouldn't be hard to find if you need one. Lots of cars used the same OD. I have a Ford OD on the floor of the shop with the same solenoid. Good Luck.

    I would try unplugging the sol. first and then see if the fuse still blows, if it does the problem is in the wiring, if not its in the solenoid.

    The folks who have posted are spot on... shorts in the OD system are most likely to be caused by failed wiring ... eg the service wiring is shorted to ground... take a very close look at the overall interfacing wiring and let us know what you find.

    Thanks Folks:



    The car has been totally rewired and I have rechecked my work.



    I removed the solenoid, #4 terminal is shorted to ground. Also, the solenoid dosn't pass the bench test.



    I need a replacement, it's a delco Ramey #1119772.



    They used lots of these but I can't find one.

    Try calling Max Merritt's Packard parts. I was there last week and I saw numerous O/drive solenoids. I'm sure they will have the one you need.:)

    Here is a company that sells new Overdrive Solenoids. Both 6V and 12V. But they are not cheap!

    Thanks for all the information.



    I fixed the problem. I took the solenoid apart and repaired it. I used a rubber grommet to replace #4 terminal isolater. Works great!!!
