Exhaust - How do I fix THIS?

Okay,

I thought it would be a pretty simple thing. I received the new exhaust parts last week, so today is the day. I hate exhaust work, but you have to do it, right?

So, I got the old exhaust off up to the bottom of the bend on the pipe that goes into the exhaust manifold. Apparently, my grandfather had a new exhaust put on, and started there instead of at the manifold. When I was trying to figure out the rest, I found this. No wonder it was so loud!

So, any way to fix this? Also, I broke 2 studs for the exhaust manifold. Looks like I'm drilling and tapping to fix it. Anyone know how deep I can go without causing other problems.

One last question. Anyone know where I can find exhaust and intake manifold gaskets for a '25 Super Six?

Never fails to happen. Go to fix one thing, find 4 more. I'm beginning to think I should just tear this thing down to the frame and start over. :(

Looks like Dale Cooper has some of the gaskets you need. http://www.hudsonmotorcarco.com/

As to the manifold, have you talked to either Carl Weber or Dave Kostansek? They sometimes have older Hudson parts for sale. They're both listed in the H-E-T roster.

The manifold can be welded, and in the process, weld on a new bolted flange so you don't have this occur again. then you wled a matcvhing flange on the pipe. Okay, it's not original, but neither is the weld! There are two methods of welding, and the best by far is the spray method, where the manifold is placed in an oven and pre-heated, then powdered cast iron is sprayed on with a special torch. The other method is to arc-weld with a nickle-iron electrode, but this is not recommended for an application okie this. I use it to weld a steel flange on theback of the manifold, but to weld a repair like that it would be rather untidy. Check Olsons Gaskets in Port Orchard, Washington for new gaskets. If you go the welded flange way, you only need a flange gasket, and do away with the threaded collar. Good luck,

    Geoff.
  • Having observed your adventure with your '26, keep moving forward. Taking it down to the frame just isn't necessary!! I'm not into the real oldies but you have a great one there! These things can really be frustrating on the way through but are really worth it in the long run. Thanks for continuing with the Hudson family.

Don't despair! Fix the part and keep having fun driving it. From the pictures it looks pretty complete and is a part of your family history - how cool is that!

I tell you if mine had been running I may have never torn it down!

When I got my 1929 Hudson a 1936 Ford came with it. The cars had bin sitting for about 10 years. I got both running and drivable and had (FUN) with both. I then desided to take the Ford apart (15 years ago) Its Still apart. I will not do the Hudson that way. Your car looks great. There are a bunch of great people in the Hudson hobby that will help you keep her on the road. Thats what I am doing with my 29. Just a little advise from one that knows to keep her on the road an not a bunch of parts all over the place. Ron
