Source for fine thread fasteners?
Hi,
I've found it difficult to locate fine thread fasteners locally, particularly items such as the trim screws that hold the headlight rings (a pan-head/countersunk 10-32 stainless steel screw). Can anyone recommend an online source for parts such as these?

I'm not sure what you mean by "pan head countersunk" screws; I thought the two were mutually exclusive! But, have you tried the screw section of your local (good) hardware store. Not Home Depot....but a real hardware store? Mine has such a wide variety of fasteners that the Home Depot people simply send their customers over there!
For really exotic stuff you can go to McMaster-Carr, though there will be shipping charges. They're on line at http://www.mcmaster.com/ .
Type "pan head" into the search window at left and you'll be presented with a number of interesting options.0 -
The correct description is "Oval head". Can be had either Philips, or slotted. these are also used in window trims in late twenties, early thirties, and trim strips. The sizes for the latter are 8/32 and 10/32, 5/8" length.
McMaster Carr have them, but they wouldn't post to me here in N.Z. so a a helpful forum poster obtained a supply for me from his local hardware store, and posted them to me. Whilst in Pasadena a few years ago, I obtained some of these from Berg Hardware, Altadena Ave, Pasadena, the most wonderful hardware store I have ever been in, with good old-fashioned personal service.

Yes, thanks. I was having a senior moment in regard to hardware descriptions last night. The screws on my '41 light rings also have a long shank and fairly short thread; I don't suppose that matters unless it's a concourse-quality car (and that term doesn't belong in the same sentence with my survivor).
I've tried the local hardware stores, both locally owned and the Home Depot types, with no luck. They all stock an oval head trim screw but it's in 10-24 rather than 10-32. Same is true with the auto supply stores. I figured there would be a number of online sources, just wanted to find one with whom someone already has had good experiences.
One of these days we'll have trouble finding ANYTHING in standard measure, as they will only be selling metric fasteners (and I have an inexplicable dislike of the metric system).0 -
The problem with metrics is, that they have no such thing as an inch worm. Like my engineer friend Wolfgang said, "just vorm"0

My favorite source is Gardner-Westcott Co. (www.gardner-westcott.com). They've got a tremendous stock of screw and bolt types, washers, etc., most available in stainless or chrome as well as standard zinc plated. Great folks to do business with, and they don't mind very small orders.0

done my whole 41 pickup in stainless. strictly stainless company sells every kind imagineable. even got ARP stronger than grade 8 bolts, nuts, U-bolts for the suspension stuff. you can buy 1 or 100, can't do that with the big industrial outfits! and, no rusted hardware again!! (gonna be my daily transportation up here in made of salt roads minnesota).0
