'29 Essex rear wheel bearing and race
Hello, new guy here from upstate New York. I have a 1929 Essex rumble seat coupe that has been stored for many years. The car has 15,000 original miles and was last registered in 1936. My Dad and my son and I are in the process of adjusting brakes and pulled the rear drums to look over the shoes and found the bearing races have some very severe pitting.
The bearings look okay, surprisingly, and have a Timken part number of
415TMM. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the part number of the race for that bearing. I think we could get away with just two new races but I didn't want to start trying to get it out of the removeable housing till I knew a little more about availability of the race.
Also the felt seals look like they could use replacing if anyone knows a part number. I tried a search here and found some info about rear axle lube and a mention of the "unobtanium status" of the 415T bearings- Hope that's not the case!
Thanks in advance for any help would be appreciated!

The outer cup is Timken 312A, which may be obtainable, I don't know. the cones are definitely very hard to come by, being a "T" suffix, indicating tapered inner surface. There may be other cups you can use with slightly different corner radius or width, so get your bearing specialist to do a bit of searching for you. Good luck,

Thanks, Geoff!
An answer in less than 20 minutes!
We're using your tech article to get our brakes working properly. I'll see what we can come up with on the 312A race and post an update.
Thanks for the quick reply!0 -
To make life easier for other '29 owners and to hopefully get feedback on filling-in the blanks on the '29 parts manual, I've created an online verson of the printed parts manual. The goal is to move it from a text searchable to a more complete database that can be searched with dropdown menus. In any respect, this may help in your restoration efforts: http://www.tradeslang.com/1929parts.asp
Also, since this is a car out of storage, I'm assuming it isn't in the 1929 Essex Registry yet. Would you mind entering your car's information into this website so we can add it to the registry?

Check out Greg Maroney's site @ http://www.hudsonterraplane.com/tech/tech_index.htm - I have the 1929 Essex Mechanical Specifications on there. These include the rear axle bearings.
I also have the following booklets on that site:

PS. I've been experiencing some problems with opening some of the items on Greggs site using IE - however, they do open with Netscape.
The parts book is searchable, by the way.0 -
Thanks to all that have replied. We're working on the availability of some races through our local NAPA. Different part number but dimensions look good. If that falls through I'll try Olcar Bearing Co.
I'll post an update when there's been some progress later in the week.0 -
Would you mind registering your 1929 with the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane club at this website. We're trying to keep tabs on all the 29's. Thanks.
