37 tplane differentail issue - help needed

installed a ring and pinion acquired from ivan z. - did all of the grinding filing to the housing and reassembled including the wheel bearings shims and caps. backlash and axle play is correct.

i can turn the pinion using the flange and hold the axle so that it won't turn as the pinion is turning. obviously something is wrong. the differentail was fine before i pulled the rear. any clue as to what might be happening?

i used a tool which basically pulled the drum by putting pressure against the axle I hit the sides of the drum with a heavy rubber hammer to cause a vibration to help release the pressure. by pushing the axle in could of I damaged the dirrerentail?

If you used the standard drum puller (bolt the legs to the face of the drum, tighten the screw by hitting the dogbone with a heavy hammer) you are fine. Banging the outside of the drum with a hammer (I would have used metal not rubber, for better vibration) is also fine.

Do NOT hit the end of the axle with a hammer! You can damage the block on the inside of the differential
  • when turning the pinion and holding one axle the opposite axle should turn if wheel is off the ground. If it don't is when you have a problem. If opposite wheel is on the ground and you hold the other axle and can still turn the pinion is also when you got trouble .
  • okay - with both wheels off the ground:

I held the right axle and turned the pinion and the left side axle turned.

I held the left axle and turned the pinion and the right side axle turned.

Then trying to hold both axles so they would not turn I turned the pinion and one axle would always turn.

if I understand your reply correctly then all is well and I will continue on with the project. If I misunderstood please let me know so I won't do what I will have to undo.

better to be safe and confirm I'm heading in the right direction.

    thanks!!!
