28 essex sedan
I just purchased an original running 28 essex california car no rust.
I need some help with the correct cable routing for the starter and radiator louver cables. Any help will be greatly appreciated...
I have been reading some of the posts on this site and it is really interesting and already have seen some helpful information....:):)

You might want to mention the area you live in. There's a chance that someone with a '28 might live near you, which would make things awfully handy!0

The radiator louvers are operated by a rod (not cable), so for the direct route from the cab control to the swivel on the radiator surround there is only one hole through the firewall. I have passed the rod throught a rubber grommet I put in the firewall hole first to lessen any possible rattles.
The starter I have seen a few different routes but one exit hole is fairly well up the firewall and the cable then goes through a small support bracket lower down then to the starter lever.
Geoff Clark is sure to add fine tuning comments to this thread. What he does not know about the '28 Essex is probably not worth knowing!
Good luck. What about a photo or two?

thank you for the response,
I live in Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley so if there are any 28 Essex owners close would really like to pick your brains. I have only had the car a week so am just reading and getting as much information as possible.
I will post a picture soon...0 -
I have a few parts for a 1928 Essex for sale. Call me with your needs. (805-467-2966) I live near Paso Robles California. For the starter cable, you can buy a hood release (step down model) from Bill Albright and shorten it for your starter pull. Rich Smithen0

Richs thanks for the reply I'll try that for the starter cable.
I'll call you and see what parts you have for the 28.
I have another question, what oil is best to use in the engine?
It is original and wondering if there are any additives anyone has used in the 28 6 cyl. I also need the type of transmission oil and rear end grease.
thanks all for the help.

Everyone you talk to will have a different idea I am sure - anyway, I use Penrite HPR30 (multigrade) in the engine; Penrite Transoil 140 in the gearbox and diff; the grease I use is a good quality hi temp for the universals and wheel bearings etc; since doing the king pins I have used Penrite Stearing Box Lube (has consistancy like treacle) for these, as well as in the stearing box. Very happy with the performance of these products to date and having had the engine totally rebuilt have decided it is not worth skimping on oil quality to save ten bucks a container.
I am interested to hear what others use.

Hi,
I have an instruction manual for the 28 Essex on my website that you can download for free. It may have some info in it you can use. It's a scanned copy of an original. There's also lots of other info on the site for download.
I know you'll enjoy the car, I've had my 29 for over 20 years now.

Appreciate the information you all have given me. I am currently rewiring the car as all the wire insulation is deteriated and I have a constant drain on the battery. I found a company on line Brillman who sells the fabric insulated wire. they have it in different colors. Can any one tell me what the correct color of the original wires were? Or does it matter.
If my memory serves me right on a 6v system the ammeter should stay centered at 0 if all is working correctly.
I am definately enjoying my new Essex.... took it for a ride this past Sunday just around the local area lots of looks.... even tho it needs paint....

I found a choke cable that worked great for the starter was able to modify and use the original knob. I will be looking for the correct rod for the louvers, they are stuck in the open position from a couple of coats of paint right now. I replaced some of the wiring under the dash and the fuse block, had a constant draw on the battery, seems to have fixed that problem. I have ordered the fabric insulated wire so will rewire all when that arrives.
Does anyone have a source for window channels. I saw some in JC Whitney and wonder if anyone has used them.
Again thank you all for the information and help you have been giving this new Essex owner.
