News from the electical front

My generator checked out okay as far as integrity of the circuits go, don't know about charging as they couldn't check that without knowing what car they were checking for. The points in the regulator look new, I replaced the battery with an Optima Redtop six volt. I also polarized the regulator again once I had hooked up the generator, it spun in the correct direction. This battery has taken a full charge and the battery tender shows green. Now I need to rig up a battery holder for the skinny Optima. It sure would have been nice if Optima would have recognized this problem and at least put a large flat base under the battery to keep it upright. How have others dealt with this problem? I guess the guys who checked my generator sell a single wire six volt alternator for about $85,that would eliminate the generator and voltage regulator. That might be a good way to go.

Fan belts should be good with no cracks ( and the right size) and they should be snug and not slip.
  • Belt is good, no slip. I'm beginning to think that Centenial Battery was just no good. The first one I got from them would never drop below three amps while charging, the second one would never top off, the Optima topped off immediately. I'll check things today and see how I'm fairing now.

Also, I clean my battery terminals with an old toothbrush and baking soda with a little bit of water to make a paste. Corosion bubbles right off. Then wipe clean and put some grease on the terminals. Corosion does not return. Very inexpensive method. Who needs Radio Shack?

Al Saffrahn sells a metal box that fits over and holds the optima in position that is same size as old 6v battery. I put Hudson sticker on mine and it looks great and stays in place!
  • That sounds like a better solution than my bungee cord LOL
  • Another happy Optima user with it in fake battery box with Hudson sticker on it. Looks good. Starts the car every time stays charged.
  • Someone post Al's e-mail address or a phone number please.

  • What the heck is an electical? I guess I lost my "R" somewhere. I looked in our new roster and found Al Saffron's phone number so I'll call him tomorrow. Right now the bungee cord will have to do.

The box referenced in Ron's post (by Sam Jackson) is niftier than the one I have. If I were you, I would contact the guy in Corona!!
  • Ron, that is perfect and Corona is only about 40 miles away from me. That is what I am looking for and will fit my battery tray and holder perfectly. I have to work tomorrow but will try to call him anyway, maybe I won't be the only person working on labor day. I'm not complaining, many people around here don't have jobs that they had last year and are off work because of that and not the holiday. I am thankful to have a job and still be part of the labor force. Besides that I have always had jobs that have required me to work holidays, this is nothing new. I hope everyone on the list is having a great holiday weekend.
