262 head number?

I would like to get a 262 iron head to replace my aluminum 308. I have a lead on one with a casting number of 304621, but it isn't listed in my 48-53 parts catalog. Any ideas if this will fit a wide block? I'm sure Bill Albright or some of the other usual suspects have a bunch of them, but it would probably cost more in shipping (to Denver) than the cost of the head.

Thanks for your help.

The part number and casting numbers are usually not the same, so no surprise that number doesn't show up. Best bet is to find a head that says "262" on it, as that's going to be a '52 or later head and sure to fit.

I don't believe this to be true for the cast iron though I believe it is for the aluminum (though I don't know if the aluminum narrow 232 was marked or not the c.I. was marked 500 perhaps the aluminum is also). My narrow block 262 with cast iron head is marked 262 but the aluminum ones are not. A difference other than width will be the the return from the heater. the wide block is located on the side of the head and the narrow returns into the top. both have top ports but only the wide block will have the side port.

Thanks for the info guys. What would be a fair price to pay if I can locate the correct one? I have had 262 heads on most of my Hornets over the years, but never had to buy one. I guess I should have removed one before selling........

The casting number on my 49 narrow block 262 is 301766 2 . I think the last "two" isn't part of the casting number, but maybe a desgnation of the mold number or even the shift. I bet your 304626 number is a wide block.
