r&r 1928 Essex steering wheel
I have been trying to find information on the proper procedure to remove the steering wheel from my 28 Essex. Let me rephrase this, remove the horn button / light switch and throttle controls without damaging them so I can remove the steering wheel. I don't want to start pulling and pushing and then damage something.
thanks

Wayne, if your car is left hand drive, you wil have to remove the light switch from the bottom of the steering box and the lever and shaft, and the hand throttle linkage and column shaft. The horn button should come out with these, but I'm unsure, as our r.h.d. cars don't have any of this gear on them. the steering wheel is held on the boss with eight screws, and the boss i held on the column by the large retainingnut, with a woodruff key. Why do you want to remove the wheel? If it is to remedy a loose boss, you will do well to get a new boss made, as these are originally made of die-cast, and are an accident waiting to happen. Don't wait until it disintegrates, get a new one on now. You can get them machined at any competent engieering shop, out of brass, alloy, or steel, depending on what finsh you want. But believe me, it's not a case of "if" it breaks, but "when".

Geoff,
The reason I want to remove the steering wheel is to refinish it and replace the throttle lever and light switch levers. Is there any way to remove these levers without disconnecting the switch and linkage at the the end of the steering gear box?

Not to my knowledge! You have to remove the switch to get access to the clamps that locate the shafts. That's one advantage of right hand drive, we don't have any of that rubbish around the steering box! Our hand throttle is a bowden cable, and the light switch is mounted on the dash.0
