The following is a picture of my son Joseph with Smoky Yurnik taken at the 1999 Nashville nationals. Smoky was the source of many of the Hudson racing innovations which were used by Stepdown racers during their successful campaigns.

More about Smoky's life can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Yunick

The other Racing issue at Nashville was "How quick could you get to the swimming pool?" After I looked through all the parts-that were out,I went to the pool at the host hotel. It looked like everyone was there!! The pool was standing room only.LOL

Clutch - man, you can say that again! And the bar was SRO that 1st aft. with only 1 bartenderess (I remember we bussed the tables for her).

I met Smokey at a big SEMA show in Vegas, about 10 years ago. Press Kale had been invited to show his '34 T PU and Sam Jackson, Buzz Stahl, Dave Deyoe, Press, & I went there for it (think Sam was working for SEMA at the time, engineered the invitation?).

Right, Smokey spoke loudly due to hearing loss - he was very funny as well as foul mouthed while his pretty wife went around the room with various handouts at a "meet the press" type of interview. As I recall he answered some of our Hudson queries. He wore what I assume was his traditional garb, white jumper with "the best damn garage in town" patch sewn on. Definitely a "character"!

Ivan wasn't there but his '51 H racing cp. was prominently displayed in front of one of the big entry ways so we all congregated around it with Smokey for pics, a "neat" occasion.
