I have a pair of Hudson Approved accessory lights in the original box. If someone needs them to complete the set I'd sell em. Otherwise I'll put them on the Terraplane.

    Hey Josh,

I have never seen light like those! Where would they go? I have a 36T that will need some front turn signals here soon and that might be just right!

    Thanks,

Josh would know this for sure, but I believe those are postwar accessory lights meant to fit all pre-StepDown Hudson cars and truck. They are not for a particular year.

My advice on the '36 T would be to do what I did on my '37. First, I acquired a StepDown turnsignal switch with the 6 (7?) wires, the kind that is wired through your brake lights (it uses the brakelight filament in the taillights as the signal light). Then, I acquired the correct front fender lights for my year of Hudson. The switch mounted right up to the steering column just like it was made for it, and there is even a metal raceway to neatly take the wires down the column, and a little cast fitting the takes them up under the dash. I even cut open the column and mounted a hose clamp on the shaft, so they are self-cancelling.

Then I wired the taillights into the switch (as you would for a StepDown that doesn't have a separate bulb dedicated to turnsignal use), and wired the front fender lights into the switch (they were originally meant as parking lights, but who would know!).

The whole thing looks original and the StepDown switch is so minimal that it practically hides behind the steering wheel hub. (I painted it black so it would disappear.) Unlike some of those huge, chromey aftermarket turnsignal switches that call attention to themselves.
  • Or....you can go the way I did and just use one of those clunky aftermarket turnsignal switches on the column and find some '37 Buick park lights. Paint em up and go.

    Hey Denver,

wow nice looking ride! Although I do like the look of the lights on the fenders I sooo love my fenders appeal without the lights on them. I do want to add turn signals so I will figure something else out.

Jon, I do like the idea of how you did it. Is their a big diffenence in the 'stepdown' turn signal switch vs the aftermarket chrome jobs in terms of the size? Since I dont have any signals at all-except my arm ha ha- I want to add them. I have the 6 volt flasher and dual filament 6v bulbs in my tail lights but not sure on the switch and how to wire it up to the flasher either.

I am not that concerned about self cancel as I dont really want to cut up my steering column I do also have the electric hand control on it also, but alas I dont have any of the electric hand control stuff on the car.

Thanks for the help and pics!

These are a very good match, however they are an inch longer and an inch bigger in diameter than the Hudson fender lights. I believe that these are what Carl Webber has on his '35H, he told me that the pair that he found were brand new and in a Buick box, so they certainly would work.

Denverslim, my car is the green one on this page -- you'll see the fender lights in this photo: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ed/TerraplaneConvertible-RockvilleMDshow2007.JPG/250px-TerraplaneConvertible-RockvilleMDshow2007.JPG&imgrefurl=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraplane&h=183&w=250&sz=19&hl=en&start=16&usg=__ZHjFnLR0YGw18kXuJYdvcYQXMMs=&tbnid=2rYj87XPm57WFM:&tbnh=81&tbnw=111&prev=/images%3Fq%3D1937%2BTerraplane%2Bconvertible%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

jjbuba, just look at any StepDown Hudson to see the turnsignal switch. It is very unnoticeable in comparison to some of the big chrome aftermarket switches and it "hugs" the steering column. Again, you can use the existing stoplight filaments as signal wires, IF you get the Hduson 6-wire switch. (The 3-wire version requires a second socket in each taillight, dedicated to turn signals only.) However, you would want to check the outside diameter of your steering column jacket in comparison to the clamps on the Hudson switch. My 1937 jacket diameter matches the StepDown ones, but I don't know about 1936. Also, it may be difficult to have BOTH the turnsignal switch AND the Electric Hand switch on the same column. It's possible that the turnsignal switch and bracket be mounted above or below the Electric Hand switch (in relationship to the distance from the floor), but this would have to be checked. I don't have E.H. so installation was a breeze.

My suggestion, if someone can't find acceptable fender lamps, is to install aftermarket, small accessory lights to the front bumper brackets, one for left and one for right turn signals. These can be removed later, when the correct fender lamps are mounted. I used bumper-mounted accessory lamps for years, until I found the right fender lamps to take their place.

Those fender lights on e-bay per Ron P's thread were fitted to a lot of

1934-5 Hudson /Terraplanes down under, I think they even went to 1936, very rare down under. Had them on both my 1934 Hudson 8 sedan and my 1935 Hudson 8 coupe.
  • I put some new after market lights like Denver has on his on my 37 T , converted them to dual filament and have them wired so on at all times light switch is on {both park and drive } and the bright element over-rides as turn signals. They are much brighter than the original single element bulb that came in them and I like the looks of haveing them constantly on. BUD

These lights came in the basket with the rest of my truck. You can get them at your local Farm/Family Tractor supply.
  • The bullet shaped lights are available as restoration parts for '36, '37, '38 Chevrolet. One vendor has them wired for dual-filament bulbs.
  • Sold for $371.00. Anyone here ???
  • They look like early 30's Packard lights. I guess that they figured that out and that was why they bid so high.

Bit hard to see, but, these are the side lights fitted to our Aussie Hudsons & Terraplanes 1934-1936, same as the ones on e-bay.

John, I've spoken to Roy at classic accessories a number of times, he is a member of the club and an old HETer. He doesn't have Hudson parking lights, in fact he is looking for a pair for a '38cv that he is restoring. He is impossible to get any thing from. I was to meet with him one day in Santa Barbara, but he stood me up! I don't consider him a source for HET.
