Not cigarettes. My 308.

I'm not an engine man, so I need a little advice. Have had this car since Jan 2007. After we got everything snugged up the engine ran fine. And does run fine now. But when I start it in the morning and drive about 5 miles it runs great and does not smoke About a half hour later I come back out from the restaurant start the car, and drive back that same mileage and it starts smoking. Now I know it's smokiing out of the breather pipe so it's got to be coming out of the tailpipe aso. After buying the car, I cleaned that engine up so that now when I pull the dipstick, the oil is crystal clear. I clean the plugs at least every 3 months. Now I have not done a compression check at this time. I do know that #3 cylinder has oil, not on the plug, although it is black, but is on the threads. None of the other cylinder plugs have that oil on the threads, although they seem to be burning correctly, and clean up nicely. No traces of wet oil on the plugs just black residue. Smoke is blue.

Whats going on here, and what do I have to do? "Ring Job"?????

    Do a compression check. You should have at least 95 to 100 in all cylinders. If you have a low one put a little oil in the cylinder and recheck the compression. If it builds up you have bad rings. If it stays the same then you have worn valve guides. 2 reasons to smoke. Walt.

    Although something is probably worn, you have to remember that modern cars have positive crankcase ventilation systems wherein smoke from the breather pipe is sucked into and burnt by the engine, so your modern car may be doing the same thing, but you won't notice it.

    My point is that if a modern car has exactly the same wear problem, you won't notice it unless you have to put a lot of oil in, or if you follow the car in another car as it goes down the street, and you may see some smoke.

    Good Advice provided;

    Perhaps also consider installing a PCV System. I have installed them on my Hudson's regardless if worn out or rebuilt by:

    remove the draft tube, place a grommet & PCV valve in the side cover; Then run a 3/8 hose to the intake fitting. Next install a Mopar Oil Fill Cap then run a 5/8 hose from the cap to the base of an airfilter. You will need to drill the base. I use a Chevy V8 Valve.
