Back in the day... I am old enough to say this, ;), Marvel Mystery Oilers were in use on many different vehicles including Hudsons. Most of those I was exposed to were installed so that the source bottle was plumbed into the intake manifold at the carb base. My recollection includes assisting my Dad in the removal of the MM Oiler from the vehicle he was trading for reuse on the replacement. I have one of those veterans in my shop as a reminder of helping Dad maintain his Hudsons.

    Hey,

I am curious as to the 'oiler' as well. I have something attached to my 36T that I am not sure if its that type of system as well. Or is it an early form of PCV?

Do you think that the sytem works ? Do flat tappet engines benifit from a top oiler ?
  • Why not just pour some MMO into the gas tank?

I have used Marvel oil in my gas tank, every fill-up, for years. (The automatic oiler is just a way to "mainline" the stuff with less effort).

My understanding, from fellow owners of the splasher sixes, is that the valves often hang up (and get stuck, when the car sits for long periods) due to the stems not getting much oil up there. The Marvel oil gets to the valves via the gasoline, not the internal engine lubrication. I can't say for sure whether the concept is valid, but I continue to use Marvel oil in my gas anyway. I haven't had any valves hang up in years, anyway!

Jon. what approximate ratio do you use ? Do yu add with each gas-up or every so often ?

Do you have any reccomendation as to oz to the tank ?? 8 oz to 16 gallons ??
  • Harry, I know the back of the can says how much to use for a tank of gas.

By the way, there is a similar product out there called "Seafoam". It works great.

The back of the Marvel Mystery Oil bottle says "For best results add 4 ounces to each 10 gallons of gasoline or diesel fuel". It also says you can add one quart to your crankcase. I use Marvel Mystery Oil in my '49 Commodore Six at every fillup. I don't know if helps to lubricate valves but the car runs better with Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank.

I have also used Marvel Oil in my tank prior to filling-up for years believing it helps lubricate the valve guides providing a little additional upper cylinder lubricant in the flat head design motor. Consequently, I have never had any valve sticking problem. Marvel oil can be obtained at Walmart in addition to Auto Stores.

A couple yrs ago a similar product appeared named Stabil, but their advertisement is geared more around 'Storage' purposes. I have simply increased the amount of Marvel Oil in the tank prior to storage and never had any fuel problems.

I've nothing against using such products, but my logical nature means I tend to doubt much effectiveness, particularly in a side valve engine. The valve stems that need assistance (if any) with lubrication, are the exhausts, and I fail to see how a dilution of 280:1 would effectively survive the combustion process. There used to be a product here called "Redex" which was promoted as cure-all for cylinder and valve wear, and it sold for many years, but died a natural death eventually. Remember water injection? It too was a cure-all for carbon formation detonation, bore wear, stoping valves from burning etc. etc. the current snake-oil product after the introduction of unleaded fuel was a fuel line catalyst called Feul-master,and aonother one called Carbonflo, which were plumbed into the fuel line, and ostensibly both supplied a pure tin lubricant to the fuel to protect the valves, and boost octane rating etc. etc. They sold by the thousands, @ $400 + until the A.A. did a scientific lab test debunking them. Guy who promoted them made millions in the meantime!

Still having problems with tigers are on the lawn are you? Maybe you should try using some MMO.
  • If you look real hard at Geoff"s picture, I think I see a bottle of MMO in that trailer!
  • I think it's a mini MMO tanker. :D

bout 30 years ago someone tried to sell me one of those snake oil additives. His demonstration on my old Facon six went like this... Put a tach on the engine as it idles, poured a pint of the stuff in the crank case. The engine RPM went up 'bout 50 more RPM. His statement was "see ? It reduces friction". A week later I went to his house with a can of my own "snake oil". Did the same demonstration.. Sure enough a jump of 50 RPM. He asked me what it was. I told him "Kerosene". Reduces the viscosity, reducing drag from the oil pump. As they say.. There ain't no free lunch.

Quick, threaten to put some MMO in the tiger's tank. Alternatively, try a dab of it behind your ears! :D
