37 Terraplane PU

Just about to start working on a bare chassis for a 37 terrapline pu. I want to get it ready first so I can pre-fit the body parts before doing body work.

A couple of questions first-

Looks like it needs new kingpins, is there a parts source for these?

What were the available rear end ratio's for 37?

Will later ring and pinion with higher ratio work?

Anyone have a steering wheel re-done? this one is cracked pretty badly.

The steering shaft is frozen up. Anyone have a good column with shaft for sale?

Has anyone converted brake over to later ones?

Thanks for any help!

    1. Kingpins aren't available from one source, but good NOS ones can be found on Ebay and are often handled by the "usual suspects" who sell Hudson parts. Check around with some of the advertisers in the WTN, like Dave Kostansek.

    2. Yes, several ratios were available but the 3-5/9 ones simply can't be found. A fellow in England -- Pat McDonald -- is re-making these, and they'll bolt right in (though the case has to be ground a bit for clearance to get them inside) but they are not cheap. Depending on the exchange rate, they could be $800 or more. Later gears won't fit because the hole patterns are different. Many folks try overdrive adaptations but the cheapest way would be to fit an entire rear axle, often from a Mustang or Chrysler product of the 60's or 70's. The WTN had an article about this several years ago, "Making your Terraplane a Highway Cruiser" I think the title was.

    3. Which steering wheel do you have. If it's the original truck one, the black one, a decent replacement can probably be found, used. The "banjo" wheel wasn't original to the pickup. I've never seen anyone in the States who can repro that type of plastic, but Pearlcraft, in Australia, does a very close approximation of the "flecked" plastic. Google them.

    4. You should try Robbie Williams for the steering shaft and gear, he's dismantled many '37's over the years and has lots of used parts. He's in Clio, Michigan -- contact info. is in the H-E-T Roster.

    5. Someone makes a disc brake kit for the Hudsons. I myself simply replaced the front shoes and backing plates on my '37 with larger ones from a StepDown. I have no problem stopping.
  • I've got a complete Steering wheel and column with gear box, not froze up. The forum email/pm system is haveing problems. Send me a reg email---BudHolmesViolins@Verizon.net

    Thanks guys,

I sent a pm on the column. Contacted Robbie as well.

Steering wheel is stock PU. Not banjo.

Any source on the floor ribbed panel for the bed? This one needs replacing.
