Dang speedometer broke again
Well, this is getting tedious. The other morning when it was cold the speedometer I just bought last spring decided to start squalling then the shaft broke where the brass joins the steel shaft. I guess I will need to buy another one. Does any body have a speedometer for a 54/55 Hornet they want to sell?

I just bought a 55 Hornet sedan on Ebay for the 308 (it has A/C and 3 speed w/OD). I have been taking parts off and selling them to recoup some of the cost. Send me a message. Let me know how to get it off without damage. If I can do it in less than an hour, you can have it for the cost of postage.

I'm confused. Did the speedometer break, or the cable? Did you remove the cable housing from the back of the speedometer and check the condition of the cable itself? Maybe you're way ahead of me and you've checked it and found it's fine (therefore the problem's in the speedo itself) -- but, I just thought I'd ask!0

Jon, I have the speedo out and there is a shaft that comes out of the drive unit and goes to the indicator needle. It is broke at the point where the shaft drops in size and goes through the bearing. It looks as though the shaft is steel and the smaller shaft is bronze. It is broke or disconnected where the two join.

Maybe a vinegaroon sucked the lube out of it. LOL0

Here is an FYI that applies to Hudson's at least until '53 and probably '54-'55 as well. There is actually a lubrication point on the speedometer in the back where the speedo cable plugs in. It looks like a rivet but it's actually a cup and has a wick under it. You put a drop of sewing machine or air-tool oil in it. IF you don't you'll get a very loud screeching and the needle will jump all over the place when it runs out of lubricant...sometimes intermittantly until it runs out completely. This is maintainence probably no one ever does.0

Yep, there were vinegaroon lip marks all over the little lube cup that Aaron told us about in his last post. Truthfully though I didn't realize the little copper cup was a lube point and my speedometer did exactly what Aaron described, I think the needle jumped all the way around and twisted itself off. Now I know but I'm too smart too late, at least for this speedo. Does anyone know if this can be repaired?

When my '37 speedometer broke, about five years ago, this is the place (I think) I sent it to. They did a good job, and were recommended by a fellow chapter member who co-owns a restoration shop. It ain't cheap, though, so you'd want to talk to them before proceeding. My guess is, that you can find a used one, lube it up, and get away spending a lot less money.

Dam those thirsty vinegaroons. Harry, did you experience the warning signs of failure such as noises or the speedometer needle bouncing around? Although I'm sorry to hear about your problem, hopefully others will learn from this and lube their speedometers.0 -
As an extra source of the speedometer itself, the unit from the Jet series will also fit the '54 & '55 speedometer housing.
