ideas for getting hp out of a splasher...
guys,
any of you have any ideas for getting some extra ponys out of a
3x5 splasher?
i have one that i am about ready to rebuild for my 42. it would be
nice to get some extra grunt out of it without getting carried away.
my plan is to make it look 100% stock from the outside with some
mods inside.
Here is what I am planning on now:
install a 7.25 to 1 compression head from my 175 on it.
port the exhaust manifold.
install 2.5" exhaust.
pertronix ignition conversion.
have the cam reground for some more lift & duration.
mild port work to smooth out the casting edges & flaws.
bore .030 over.
any of you have experience with different camshaft profiles?
any other ideas to try?
I am open to ideas.
thanks,

Split the exhaust (Contact Info is in another Post) to run duals and have a competition valve job done with 30 degree Intake Seats.
Isky will re-grind your Cam as well as a few other Companies for around $125.0 -
i would do the split exhaust but i want the engine to look totally stock
from the outside.
for a flathead i thought the 30 degree intake seat would hinder flow
cause it takes longer to transition from closed to just open enough
for airflow in a low-lift flathead engine. i plan on doing a good 3 angle
valve job but keeping the 45 degree seat angle becasue of this.
my experience with Pontiac V8's in stock class drag racing showed
the 45 degree seat angle worked better for cams with lift under .500".
i built my 308 Hornet engine like this based on further conversations
with Randy Maas.
thanks for the input. in know i will be giving up some good power
by not spliting the exhaust.
i will contact Isky on the camshaft re-grind to see what they can
do for me.
thanks,

You might also contact George Place, 1250 S Bredeick St., Delphos OH 45833, Phone #419-692-1094. He has built many splashers and Hornets that have made the V8 boys sit up and take notice. A lot of experience from actually driving his racing engines on ovals as well as "street racing". He has his own machine shop, and even pours babbit bearings. If you call him, (he's 86 years old) be prepared to listen to many "Hudson" stories, but what he has to say is gosple according to George.

I failed to mention check the 'piston to deck' dimension before tearing down then mill the deck pushing the pistons up to get even more compression (HP)0

Don't overlook the carburetor. No doubt , you could find a later one that looks stock, but will flow a bit better with your other mods. Just takeing the time to get the propper jetting can work wonders. Interior carb mods, like thin butterflys, polishing etc.0
