Fading Doc Hudson
The family has taken its first vacation to Disney World, been here since Friday. I have searched all four theme parks and other Disney stores and much to my disappointment it appears that Doc Hudson is all but phased out. No pins, no pictures, no T-shirts, only a talking crash car. I could find pins of some of the characters, primarily Lightening McQueen and Mater, and some toys of most other characters, even some minor ones, but no Doc!!! I am guessing with Paul Newman's passing we most likely will not see Doc in Cars II.

Dan,
Check out e-bay....You can find everything you need for Doc Hudson. Look under "disneyana"on there aswell. Toy's R Us and Target still carry lots of the "Cars" toys. Disney and Pixar have and continue to make serious money on the mechandising. As far as another cars movie, I would bet my 51 Hornet Coupe that we will see a sequel. Just because Paul Newman died doesn't mean they have to kill off a main character. There are lots of actors that make a living doing other peoples voices and kids won't know the difference. However, we all know it all depends on the writers......0 -
Turn Doc into a vampire and he'll be back on top of the heap in no time - at least until THAT novelty wears off.

Doc is dead may he rest in peace0

I hate to say this but, DOC was NOT the main character. I know, I know, it's blasphemy, but it is true, DOC, was a supporting character for the Lightning McQueen character. Granted DOC stole the show but it did not change that fact.
I have noticed all along that the DOC HUDSON stuff was harder to find. Check at the Dollar General Stores, They sometimes have Doc Hudson stuff in their Cars stuff.

Dan, Seems to me that we haven't heard the last of Doc Hudson yet. I remember hearing somewhere that another movie was partially completed about the further adventures of the Cars characters and it included Doc Hudson. The release date was supposed to be something like 2010 . Can't really put my finger on where it was I heard this.If thats true , I wonder if Paul Newman had already recorded the voice of Doc?0

I just found a bunch of Doc cars at Belk, not a likely toy store. There were multiple Doc's in racing badges as well as a few plain ones. I 've also found a bunch at Walgreens.
I suprised that there is still so much Cars stuff out since the movie is a bit old by now.0 -
Thank for the comments but my reason for posting was the fact that here at Disney World it seems that most of the main cars characters are pretty much available except for Doc and the Sheriff. The pins either have Lightening, Lightening and Mater or Lightening and Sally Carrera. Seems Mater is one of the big hits of the series #2 to Lightening. I am sure a lot is available on ebay and others just disappointed not more here.0

Dan,
Enjoy your vacation in the land of the mouse. if you should wander over to the east Coast to see the Space Center. Give us a call in Melbourne. We are in the book as well as the roster. The coffee is on and there are usually a few cold ones in the antique Crosley Shelvadore.

It is truly amazing how much Doc Hudson merchandise has been produced over the last three years. Who would've imagined it before the release of the movie?0

Darn Disney. They market to what the "younger" kids want and forget about what the slight older ones like.0 -
Honestly , Last Sunday at Wal Mart, we saw so much "Cars" stuff I said i was amazed how long it was holdin onto the market.0

As an animator at Pixar, who worked on 'Cars' and was lucky enough to animate Doc in a few shots, I figured I'd join in and give you guys some exciting updates. 'Cars 2' is in production, and is slated for a summer 2012 release. Right around the same time, a new 12 acre 'Cars Land' is set to open in the California Adventure park, which is looking super cool. Hopefully once the date for gets closer, there will be a lot more Doc themed merchandise out there, especially at the park.0

Hey Dan, we just got home from Florida, spent 4 days at Disney world/Epcot. Also went out to the Kennedy space center a couple of days before the Endeavor launch. Thought about going back to watch the launch but didn't. If you are around on Saturday check out Old Town in Kissimmee the locals all bring their cars out that evening.0

Super Dave thanks for the invitation but we only did the Orlando trip this time around, maybe next time we will get to the FL left coast. Jim, we only did Disney since we wanted to see the whole enchilada and did not know about Old Town, sounds pretty cool.
Also, Arik looks like Doc may not be done after all, good to hear.0 -
I'm about peopled out from the crowds there and its a downturned economy and low season and yet the crowds were terrible.
There are as many people in Florida as there are in all of Canada and Canada is a huge country....give me the wide open spaces.
Interestingly, after a day at the beach I asked my daughter if she would like to change from the mountains here and all the atving we do and skiing ,to a warm climate with palm trees and fishing and swimming in the ocean, etc. She hands down said no way.0 -

Would you happen to know off hand if the creators of CARS had a personal connection to Hudson's or was it just the car from that era they happened to choose for the story?0 -

When we went to Disney Land in April 2007 I found a couple neat pins and stuff in the gift shop coming out of the Buzz Lightyear ride, but that was it. As soon as we got home, I wrote to the park and suggested that they update "Autopia" to resemble the Cars movie, so we could drive Doc Hudson and Lightning McQueen on their track. Sometimes it takes a while for things to happen. For example, they were just updating the underwater submarine into a Nemo theme and Finding Nemo came out in 2003.
We didn't have enough time to see California Adventure, so this new addition is yet another reason to fly back. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.0 -

In the process of creating the character of Doc, I think the artists inevitably found that the Hudson was a perfect fit; not only for the look/period of the car as it related to the story, but also for the tie in with the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. There are a few of us who own Hudsons at the company, but I'm not sure if anyone in particular brought a personal connection/story to the project. Here’s a great quote from Lasseter:
But Lasseter's favorite seems to be a 1951 Hudson Hornet named Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), a washed-up racer who mentors Lightning. 'It looks like a grandpa car,' Lasseter says of the vehicle's design, his hands outlining the heavy but elegant shape, his eyes wide and looking down as if it is right there. He proceeds to spew forth enough info about the Hudson Hornet to fill the better part of a PBS special. He explains how the Pixar staff took the facts of the Hornet's creation and meticulously crafted a logical character out of it. ('Respect the integrity of the object,' he tells his artists when they anthropomorphize things.) Eventually, Lasseter catches himself geeking out and puts on the brakes. 'I have this thing called the Nancy Factor,' he says, again citing his wife's commonsense role. 'Early on, she told me, 'I know you love cars. But you better make this movie for the 99 percent of people out there who don't really care about racing.' So we've done that. But you still sweat the details for the people who really love it. I live for the details.'0 -
A trip to K-Mart yesterday, for light bulbs, yielded a new selection of Cars items. Take a look when you're out shopping for the kids and/or grandkids. Hudsonly Lou Cote :cool:0
