Definately should be the other way around! But hey gotta give him a break~after all he lives in VEGAS! All that heat, sand and dryness does effect the brain. LOL
  • We all know the price guides are not very accurate. However, per the NADA guide, the 49 and 51 Merc sedans are about the same as the Hudson sedans. The Merc coupes run about 9K more or so. I would assume all the chopped custom Mercs and their pricing drive up the average. Mercs are OK but I'll take the Hornet's legendary performance status any day.

    Merc is a Hudson wanabee!

As for performance, I only dragged (drug?) twice that I can remember.

I dragged my cousin's 51 Ford and beat him 3 out of 3 with the old 49 Super Six Sedan.

The other time I had his Dad's 54 Merc and dragged my buddy's Dad's 38 Buick. The Buick Straight Eight badly beat the Merc Bent Eight.

Uncle Josh, your post reminded me of a time when I was 8 and I was riding with my Dad in his 51 Hornet. There was a 50 or 51 Olds challenging may Dad to a drag race at a stop light somewhere in Los Angles. Well, Dad won. What has always stuck in my mind was that my Dad was a police officer at that time and he then pulled the driver of the olds over and chewed him out for drag racing. Funny how some thing remain in ones memory. Lee

I once beat a '55 Chevy V-8 at a stop light drag with a '53 Hornet sedan, no less, back around 1970.

I pulled into a local diner -he pulled in behind me. Wanted to see the V-8 I had in the Hudson. Poor kid almost cried when he saw that flat-head 6 and the Twin-H setup. Really got him when I told him that even with the twin carbs it was still a stock Hudson 6 engine. hehehehe

When I first got my car, my Dad compared it to the Merc as he is from those days. Then he said Hudson copied Merc and I corrected him and said the stepdown came out before the Merc. I also get that "was the top chopped" thing too.

I see the guy is getting roasted by Hudson guys for the "poor man's Merc" comment in the "ask the seller a question" section (or is it the "give the seller a ration of $%#&" section?)

:eek:As long as I have driven a Hudson, there have always been a no it all who would call it a Merc. Usually happens at car shows. Many years ago, while driving along one of Nevada's lonely{at the time} hiways, a '55or'56 Chevy passed me and kept slowing down, making me pass him and then he would pass me. after a little of that nonesence I decided he was not going to pass me again. That '49 Hudson left that chevy in the dust, not super fast but he just c ould not catch up, of course we were both pushing the century mark on the speedometer. I rolled into town a few minutes ahead of him and stopped at a restaurant, he pulled up and wanted to know what was under the hood of that "strange" car. I showed him, he said nothing, shook his head and walked away. Little do most people know that the step down prototype was out in the early '40's. The '49 Merc was origionaly a design for the '49 Ford which was desinged by someone other than Ford and sold quite well.,, but they had poor quality and have a very poor survival rate. Hudson was and is to this day the better car. Happy Hudsoning, Arnie in Nevada

I have tried hard not to give my never-to-be-humble-opinion on this eBay post and I expect that the same mentality that is roasting this "non car guy" will respond much the same to me. But, come on and give me a break. Is our collective ego so thin that an off the wall comment by someone trying to sell a car can turn the most mild manored Hudson lover into some type of a Jeckel and Hyde? This is a very nice car and in his note he tells us that he has a $3,800 reserve. Might be a bit high, but many might think it reasonable. The seller tells another potential buyer that the auction is going to run to the end with a sale to the high bidder, providing the reserve is met. I was impressed by the one note to the byer that identified the car. But as a Hudson owner I was disapointed by Hudson folks taking him to task. It is hard to build a strong club when we show this side of our nature. We know Hudsons, and I would guess that the rank and file know as much about the chop-top Mercs. And, that is why we drive Hudsons. We should be working to find this great car a home rather than besmeriching the gentleman trying to sell the car. There is one good thing about his ad. He did not call it a "Doc Hudson!" :):):)

I knew when I saw it someone was going to give him the treatment.

    Guess I was right
  • Maybe that's why HET doesn't allow judging.. LOL
  • I've always referred to my 53 superwasp as a Merc on steroids!
