Stepdown Antenna Removal
I'm down to taking off the last piece, before I start stripping off the paint on my '48. It's the antenna. I've gotten the knob off, and the nut off. Not sure what to do next to remove it, and I don't want to force anything, since this will be going back on. I welcome any help.

One possibility is, that the rubber gasket has affixed itself to the paint and all you have to do is slip a thin prying device (razor blade or eraser shield?) between the gasket and the paint to separate the two. Then gently press on the inside part and it may pop off.0

Nope! That didn't do it.0

When I removed my antenna I was able to get the knob off and the nut similiar to your steps - it was the escutcheon (the piece between the knob and headliner) that was stuck on mine. My escutcheon piece was already cracked and broken on the edges so It just helped it on its way.
I would carefully try a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the parts up and let them cool down a few times to see if the expansion and contraction would free up your problem. - I might even try spraying some warm soap and water on it (providing you have eveything else removed) to help lube it up.

Wes: I looked at my antenna which is off the car. There are two (2) nuts to remove. I am going to try and post a picture. the plactic part next to the headliner goes between the two nuts.0 -

That's right the estucheon does cover one more nut...0 -
Wes, if you don't figure it out, call me. I have mine completely disassembled and off the car, as I decided to fill the hole in and not return the antenna to the roof following the paintwork. The car is in my garage, plus, it will be at the monthly Sonic cruise-in on Thursday night on North Germantown Rd. If you want me to I can bring the complete antenna assembly with me so you can peruse it at the cruise-in, so let me know if you plan to go.

I see the problem. There's a washer covering the second nut. I'll go out to the shop tomorrow and get that antenna off now. Thanks for the responses! John, I'll try to be here Thursday night, if just to see your car!0

I GOT IT ! Seems after removing the first nut, the flat washer was in there so tight, I thought it didn't come out. After a lot of wiggling, and turning, I got the plastic piece to release, and saw the second nut. After taking off the second nut, and unclipping the wire attached to the antenna, everything came apart as it should. Thanks for the pictures!0

Well it took 4 hours but I finally got the antenna removed. Broke a couple of parts though. Couldn't help it. Everything was frozen. I will make sure that ALL washers are ground down on the edges for a easier fit before re-installing.
I will need the small black plastic part (step washer) that is on the inside but fits thru the sheet metal of the roof. If anyone has this piece I could sure use it.
