Hudson Dinky Toy

I picked this up at a local New Year's weekend market day at the beach. Thought it too good to pass up at $25 as Hudson toys seem to be as rare as hens teeth.

Is this model common at all elsewhere?

    Alistair, Meccano made about four color versions of this toy. I believe the earliest model is the 139B. There was the beige and maroon top version with matching maroon wheels ,the beige top with blue body with beige wheels and then there were the later models one of which was a wild two tone light mint green with a red stripe going from hood to trunk lid down the middle. Your is called a "repaint" and has little value excepting that it's a Hudson. To toy collectors origionality is everything. I've seen origional boxes go for more than the toys themselves. The wheels on yours are also not origional . The origional ones were smooth. These were produced by Meccano under the name Dinky from about the late fourties up until about 1959.I think it's great you found one and it really does have a nice paint job. BTW the price you paid is not bad these have really taken off pricewise in the last few years.

    I have 2 original Dinky Toy Hudsons, both with original paint. Rather crude, especially when compared to the plastic ones the factory had made.

    I also have a toy Railton, I think in it's original box, that I bought in England; I've never seen one here.

    Yep, there are usually several on the 'bay; the maroon over beige is very cool...none of the colors are very cheap, either, and they're often pretty rough. Yours is a repaint or resto, but it looks very cool!

    Also on Ebay you can purchase replacement tires (tyres) for the Dinky Toys "Hudson Sedan" and many other Dinky cars and trucks. Also, I believe someone is reproducing the box from this particular Dinky Toy much like they're reproducing boxes for all those Matchbox miniature vehicles we had in our childhood. I have a nice maroon over light brown Dinky Hudson and I purchased it at an antique shop in Montana for $15.00. Of course, that was way back in 1981 when fifteen bucks was a significant amount of money! Don't forget, Dinky Toys also issued a '57 Hudson Hornet too.

    Thanks for your comments guys. I will be keeping my eye out for other gems like this at other fairs / market days in the future. I like getting these type of things out of interest for HET products and pleasure rather than as a "collector".

    I should have kept the matchbox and dinky cars I had as a child but as a lot of us do when growing up, I gave them away to cousins because I too big for them!!!! I wish my parents had intervened. I have not got rid of anything good from our kids childhood - probably to my detriment as I have stuff stored all sorts of places around the house & sheds.

    Any ideas of where repro boxes are available from?
