Hydra-Matic Overhaul
What would a fellow expect to pay for an overhaul kit? Not including what they call "hard parts" ?
Just wondering what the entry level OH is gonna cost at MINIMUM. Of course that never happens. LOL Anyone done this recently? Yes I know Gus does it but I insist on doing it myself..:D

It all depends what your trans needs, if you need steels then a master kit for 360.00 . If you don't need steels a less steels kit at 297.00 . Another place for kits and bushings is NorthWest Trans Parts at 800-327-1955. On most of the ones that I've been doing, I have replaced front drum, delivery sleeve, rear clutch drum, reverse internal gear and mainshaft pilot bushings. IF you need the hub repaired on the torus cover Dacco Torque Converters at 800-443-2226 can do them talk to James Simmons at X7777. Have fun!! Lou Cote0

Thank you to both.. Just what i was looking for. I did find NWtransmissions on the web at http://nwtparts.com/
It's a 54 Hornet and The problem is delayed up shifts until the engine and transmission is warmed up. Like 5 miles or so!
It sounds like I need to do some basic trouble shooting, determine if external adjustments will fix it. If not, then a disassembly and inspection will tell me what i need.
Now I need to get up my nerve!
Thanks again, Dave0 -
Do you have the factory Hydramatic rebuild manual? its very good I used that when I rebuilt my tranny. Followed it religiously. Just be careful when you remove parts there are a lot of checkballs that can fall under the bench never to be seen again. Clean area take your time. I also was lucky enough to get all the factory tools from a guy who was getting rid of everything in his garage. Make a big difference in my mind to doing the job right. Also remember to fully drain the pan and torus. And Gus is a good source for the front and rear seals. Got mine from him he was also a fountain of knowledge. Great guy.0

I guess the $100 question is can you overhaul a Hydramatic if you don't have the factory tools? It appears you could improvise something to compress the clutch packs. Is there anything that absolutely can't be done without the factory tools?

Nope you can do without them. Just sure is nice when manual says use such and such a tool you have it right there on bench. But you could certainly do the same job without them. Just keep an eye on the parts especially when disassembling.0
