I'm looking to buy a Essex, and being new to the forum, is their a good source for parts? It is a 1931. Are parts hard to find?

You may wish to join the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, even if you're not yet ready to buy your Essex. You'll find this a good resource for technical information and parts, as well as a way to tap into a network of Essex owners worldwide. The homepage is http://www.hudsonclub.org/

You can also post questions here at the Forum.

Generally, anything from the early 1930's will be harder to find parts for, than earlier or later cars, due to the fact that so little was being produced (due to the Depression). 1931 is a fairly rare Essex, but 1932 (I think!) is even rarer in the Essex (as opposed to Essex Terraplane) line. But the stuff IS out there. That's why we have the Club -- as a clearinghouse of information for all this rare stuff!
  • yeah they are tuff to find parts for. i have a 31 coupe. stuff is out there. though. if you need things like fenders, hood or trunk, you better be in no rush. mechanical parts can be adapted just like any other make depending on your abilities.

    Hi Jeff,

hrdhudson is right these parts are hard to find, what sort of 31 are you looking at and what is missing?

I also have a coupe(deluxe) as well and as James says the mechnical stuff can be adapted.

The 31s seem to be pretty rare compared to alot of earlier models

  • Mostly engine parts, maybe to rebuild.

    Jeff
  • there are some companies out there supplying parts. some of the bearings are not inserts, they are babit type and you would have to find a shop that does that type of work. i think egge has everything that is available.
  • I look at Egge and they listed nothing for Essex. Looking for gaskets sets and some engine parts.

    Jeff
  • call or email egge machine. they do have stuff. i tried them when i first got my car. you cant get everything but they do have engine internal parts. gasket set you can get from dale cooper. i think his site is hudsonmotorcarco.com me personally, i dont think i would rebuild one of these engines. but that is just me. for what it will cost i would swap in a late model 4 banger and a t5 trans. one that i was considering is the gm ecotech. there is a bell housing available to use it as rwd. or an adapter to run a

200r4 auto. the engines are available cheap, the adapter is a little pricey. im not a purist, its just my 2 cents, more fficient, more power, more reliable.
  • Try this place for gaskets. I got the ones I need (1929 Hudson) and they even made me a set of felt replacements for the rear end for my 1929 after someone here gave me the dementions. There is someone in the club that sells them also I think. Good luck, Ron

Hi Jeff, you could email Geoff Clark if anyone would know what can and cant be adapted or swapped around he would, the The Christains have the pope and we have Geoff LOL there's no one like a Kiwi (New Zealander) we had to adapt stuff as we were so isolated from you guys for such a long time for 1 reason and another, and there is also David Webster he's onto it as well
