At present, I know of any readily-accessible list of the total number of cars registered by the Club. Such a list exists, no doubt, it simply isn't online or in any form accessible by common folks. You could contact our membership chairperson and ask her how that might be obtained, or you could ask specific questions about a particular car. But it's really not her job to provide such info., she's quite busy as it is!
Possibly someone will, in the future, step forward and offer their services to pull together this information for the benefit of all.0 -
Yes, there was such a Registry that was taken on by David Putman. Here is a copy of an email that he sent out to all the current Registry managers in January of this year, which included a copy of this mammoth undertaking:
Many years ago Roy Marks Jr. had a vision of one big HET Registry containing all of the HET cars that are still in existence. I aggressively worked on this database for about five years but nobody seemed to take an interest in the information. This data is dated but it may give you some leads of other cars that may still be in existence.

After seeing this listing, it boggles the mind to imagine how many hundreds, and hundreds of hours he invested, in trying to collect, and update information for as many cars as he could. And he deserves a sincere "Thank You" from all of us for all that he did! It is very unfortunate that he didn't receive more interested support from the membership that would have encouraged him to continue.
This is what I am finding having recently taken on the 1919-23 Essex 4, and 1921-23 Hudson Super 6 Registries. The only vehicle information that the HET Club had to help get me started were the current membership updates that they send out to the Registry managers quarterly, (there was no earlier vehicle info). To make a concentrated effort to construct, and update one of these Registries takes trying to locate, and get your hands on earlier Registry listings, digging through old HET Membership Rosters looking for cars, sending out emails, letters, , posting messages on various web group pages searching for leads, attempting to track cars that have sold, etc, etc. This takes a LOT of time to find the current info, and status of each car. It makes sense to break the Registries down into smaller, more manageable categories rather than one huge & mammoth listing for everything.
As I have stated in previous my posts asking for help with the Registries that I am working on. These Registries can be a very valuable tool for the owners of each model/year group of car to assist them in contacting other owners of their specific model for help with technical advice, parts, and other information to aid in the preservation, and restoration of their car. I encourage everyone to contact the Registry manager for each HET car they own, so that they can list, and or update the status of each surviving car.
When doing this please make sure to include the Serial#, AND Engine# for your car. This is very important to enable us to track cars as they are sold, and change hands!!0 -

I am the manager of the Stepdown 8 Registry and I did not receive any such email or list from Dave Putman. I would definitely like to see this list, do you have Putman's email address?0 -
Hi Pat,
I sent you a copy of the Registry.0 -
Dave - your thoughts & enthusiasm are most admirable
For a number of years I was the National Treasurer & at that time the Treasurer handled not only just the $ but also membership renewal & of course the renewal forms had a place to list their cars, serial, & chassis numbers. Frankly there was not an insignifcant number who would not list their cars, for various between not wanting anyone to know what they had to just being too lazy to bother.
I knew some personally who had very rare models who wouldn't list them so I'd consider it impossible to ever have an accurate list + there are also a lot of Hudsons in the hands of collectors or museums who do not belong to HET.
I knew of quite a few early Hudsons in Calif. where the cars belonged to Horseless Carriage Club members, a rather "elite" group (at least they seemed to consider themselves so), where to be a full member you must have a pre-1915 car - most of their members with early Hudsons DID NOT belong to HET & wouldn't join either! (At one time I belonged to the HCC when I had a '13 model 36).0 -
Our own AaronD did a spread sheet using info from the club register. So, it should at least show the quantity of various years and models. As far as makes registered, they're all Hudsons.0

I think there's a Railton listed in the roster as well. I'm not familiar with the history on those, though.
From looking at the list in the WTN, there seems to be some overlapping of groups and I wonder how often similar groups compare notes. For example, one of my Jets is a '53. I know it's in the 53-54 Hudson Jet list Jerry oversees, but I've never looked into including that Jet in the general 1953 Hudson list that Mr. Crow/Rynhart oversees. Do I need to? Will I bother to?
I know the Jet registry has expanded quite a bit in the last year.0 -
ROC has a most extensive registry for Railtons inc. parts cars & ones that haven't been seen for years.0

A few years ago, in response to an inquiry by a news media person about how many Hudson cars were owned by club members, the membership chairperson did a run of the data for the "lower 48" states. The result was just a few over 10,000. Of course, as noted here above, some folks don't list all their cars, and on the flip side some list parts cars, so the 10,000 figure is probably pretty close.0

Park's a smart man, so I would listen to him over what I provide, but couldn't help comment on this one.
I agree, there is probably little to no chance an accurate list could/would ever be made for reasons already listed. Best to take an educated guess, based on Roster information, which I have done. I took 75 pages at random and counted car vs. dwelling ratio. Average is slightly over 2 Hudson automobiles per household. 3800 x 2.1= 7980 .
There's a lot of folks out there who are Hudson folks who are not in the Roster and don't belong to the club, more than most people figure, I'm sure. Another 2000 cars worldwide is certainly not out of reason and probably a little low, which puts us around the 10,000 Hudsons left. I usually tell people 10-12 is a good guesstimate when I get asked this question.
In the grand sceme of things, 10k cars left from a company that made 4-1/2 million cars is a little sad. .25% is a low # for total cars produced.
On the bright side, how many Moons have you seen lately?0 -
Yep less than 1% of all the cars they ever produced survived and even saving what's left of that would take a more focused effort. On the plus side we're in better shape than some car clubs, and if you weight that against the fact that the newest of our beloved Make is about 50 years old in a country that's not good about historical preservation in general.... and we try and drive them. Survival rate is as good as can be expected.0

Park, Peter K and even I have been around the HET club long enough to be able to say that an accurate count of the remaining Hudsons cannot be made. Good guesses based on a sound estimating methods may get close. But with all things the outcome is only as good as the input. Over the years of Hudson ownership I have encountered many folks who were Hudosn owners. Most are good and genuinely helpful folks who will assist you in listing their Hudsons. Some are not interested no matter what you ask, and others will let you know in short order that listing any reference to their Hudsons will be met with unhappiness.
So, I have adopted the attitude; those who want to play get my attention. Those who have the Hudsons and do not want to play get to watch their equipment by themselves.
For three decades I have observed many folks who tried to get registries started and published. I was one of the first HETers with a computer and took on the task of assembling the original combined 48-54 Registry while keeping the 1952 registry for the HET Club. 3 months of part time work went into typing information into my computer, sorting and then culling and at last announcing a combined registry was available. The first person asking wanted a paper copy! So, I passed this work in progress on to others... the registry comments which started this thread will have linage to that original work I did, if it came from the HET club.Enthusiasm is what I had in the beginning... sober realization that the outcome is not what I envisioned was the end.
Today I am happy to know that I can pick up the phone and call folks I do not know ... who are HET members and usually connect with another human who is very happy to discuss and share Hudson information.
So as CHEBBY and CHER used to say... the BEAT GOES ON!
Happy Hudson HUNT'IN!0 -
I have a newly acquired Railton but who is ROC? Russ in Iowa0
