New Hudson Guy

Hi all, just bought my first ever Hudson yesterday Feb. 25. Picked up a 46 Super Six 4dr. for DIRT cheap, and thinking it's about time I actually built a street rod. Anybody ever stuffed in a BIG BLOCK Chevy or Ford?? Any ideas what front frame clip might work for updated steering and disc brakes?

Hi, Dep. Welcome to the madhouse!

You may want to post this at the Street Rods (Hudson Street Rods, that is) sub-forum -- find the link at the top of the page. That is the specialty section for street rodders and modified Hudsons, and you'll find all sorts of ideas knocking around there for worthwhile modifications.

Meanwhile, please consider saving and selling whatever you remove from the car, since a lot of that is valuable to those who restore them, and you can make a few bucks in the process!

Welcome and good luck with the 46, Hudsons are already hotrods as they always have been some of the fastest cars on the road,And can even still keep up pretty good at todays hiway speeds. So it could be fun to run it the way it is for a while to see how you like stock. I've built fords, chevy's, and one 29 nash into hotrods usually because running gear already gone, so if tha't the case, you'll have a cool car when your finished !!!!!!!!!! You'll find the forum very informative and sometimes very entertaining .
  • This car will never be a stocker... too far gone. This is the roughest car I've ever deceided to take on. In fact it is so rough that someone bought it on a bill of sale as a 49, then abandoned it at a wrecking yard I deal with. However, it does still have the stock 6 cyl and trans, which I will pull and sell. I know this stuff is rare....at least it still has an intact steering wheel, dash instruments, and lighted crest for the hood.

Don't ever say too far gone for a restoration. After you have been on this forum for awhile you will be amazed at the starting condition of some of the restorations that have been accomplished. That being said, you have to determine what money you want to invest vs the end value of the car and what you want as an end result.

Whether you restore, modify, or rod we are glad to see another Hudson saved from the crusher

Welcome to the Hudson community, and if at all possible join the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club and attend the national convention in Pontiac in July.

Fatman Fabrications actually makes a frame clip for the Hudsons (I'm sure you've heard of them- they advertise in all the rodding publications). Don't know how difficult the usual Camaro clip would be. Probably much easier to do the Fatman, but more $$$ involved, of course.

    Welcome aboard.

Welome to the Hudson Forum and hobby. I echo SRCraftsman2 comment never too far gone to save. Attached picture of my two Trucks before I restored them. The 1st I bought from the picture in Missisippi thinking from the south the only rust was circled. After traveling down there learned it sat outside under evergreens (after sandblasted) for long time and so rotten the cab wiggled when tried opening the door. I wanted to leave it but trailed it home anyway. Hobby money being tight, I put a Firebird front Clip on it for $150 that practically matched up then repaired the rear frame above both sides of axles, fish plated a few other areas. Plus made the floor, back cab panel, some bed panels, both door bottoms, running boards, etc, etc....I installed a Firebird tilt column, power brake assy, etc, with a complete Chevy drive train. the Truck handles like a sports car.

However if I were to build another '46 - '47 Car or Truck with GM Clip, I would measure the width of older Camaro Sub Frame for a 'narrower Track' to avoid buying -0- Offset front wheels. (The Tires were at the edge of the fenders with normal 3 1/2" offsets) requiring folding back the 'lips' to clear with =-0 Ofset. I believe Nova's also have a narrower Track. There are shorter A Frames available now to narrow 'Tracking'.

The 2nd Truck pictured I bought thinking (at the time) Hudson Trucks were rare and I would need a parts truck so after seeing the add in Hemmings I trailed all the way to Idaho to buy then attended the HET National in Salt Lake ..

This (Idaho) Truck was dented 'Everywhere', including the roof pinched down into the doors by a log Trk 'Jaws' tossing it aside).... Once home, the more I looked at it I noticed it was very solid (aside from dents) saved it, bought another Truck for parts, then eventually restored the Idaho Trk back to original with a Wasp 262, Dual Hydro, plus a few modern upgrades finishing up last Sept. It ran and handled so nicely that it became my favorite Hudson droving it everywhere until snow flew.

Both Trucks took me about 4 yrs each working nights & wknds off & on, along with some other projects.
  • I don't have any advice for putting a big block in a Hudson, I have a 47 Commodore 6, completely stock and an excellent driver. It used to really irk me just to hear of hot-rodding an old car regardless of the make, but now I realize I can't save every car or tell people what to do with their own cars.(It still irks me however) Anyway people I know laugh at me but I'd love to get a splasher 6, rebuild it and put in say a 70 Chevelle, paint it up nice and build a reverse hot-rod. It would be my protest car. I wonder if anyone has ever done that, just to see the look on people's faces when you pop the racing striped hood to reveal the Hudson 6! As you tell them you had to get rid of that junk stock 396.

    Corey-

    That's funny, right there!

    Ol' Racer-

You should post an "after" pic of your truck. I'm sure there's lots of folks that would like to see it.

    FYI

Here is a picture of each truck. Resurection did not cost a lot because of doing everything myself, (less body & work Painting) in-house. Not show quality but both very nice Driver's that draw lot of attention to the marque....
  • Lookin mighty nice---very nice transformation
