Get a can of engine enamel silver, hang the gasket by 2 wires, then spray a thin coat on both sides but do not let it run. Let dry for 12 hours, then install. It must then be torqued in steps the correct way. 7/16 studs or bolts are 65 ft lbs, 1/2 inch studs or bolts are 90 ft lbs. This is included in Walt's tech tip books.I am changing the head gasket on a 308, six.
The book says to use a non-harding sealer. I have always used motor oil but this is my first flathead.
What do you folks recommend?

If you are using a modern gasket my understanding is you don't use anything on it, it will seal very well.0

Check Hudson engines on the left side, Driver, and if you see oil marks from #3 and 4 cylinders, that gasket is not sealed or torque correctly. I paint all my gaskets to be on the safe side. FYI
I have tried a lot of sealing methods and they all worked well. However these days I suggest buying a 'Permabond Gasket' available from Randy Maas or Dale Cooper.
All other Head gaskets I would spray Permatex copper High Tack on both sides then let it 'set up' a couple hours before installing.
Always Re-torque Aluminum Cold and Cast Iron Hot a couple times before heavy use...0
