Stepdown turnsignals

My 49 commodore came with a turn signal unit when I bought it, that is in the trunk with a box of spares. The unit has half a clamp to go on the steering column but it is in't clear to me where it is supposed to mount. Does it fasten down the column at the dash, much lower than current signal lever arms?

    The original turn signal switch mounts on, and becomes the bottom half of the shift lever bracket. if your car did not come with turn signals, you will also need the top part of the shift clamp that is only the top 1/2. The non turn signal equiped cars had a full circle shift bracket. You will have to remove the steering wheel to take the full circle one off. The steering wheel will have to have two small pins protruding from the back side to actuate the return levers. They probably won't be on the wheel if your car is a 48-49.I used a couple small roll pins to accomplish that. Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks Dave, I guess I'll be looking for a bracket. Do you have any tips on pulling the steering wheel? It looks like a regular wheel puller doesn't work for these.

    I"m sure someone will chime in.. there are several ways to remove a wheel.....I have been lucky to be able to be able to use a heavy brass hammer while pushing up on the back of the wheel with my knees. Loosen the nut first..of course.. and leave it even with the shaft so you don't booger the threads.. Booger is an acceptable term..right?

    Check with Hudzilla on the shift lever bracket. i bet he has one.
