47 Hudson pickup types

This is my first post in this forum.

What cars share parts with the 1947 Hudson pickup?

I have seen references to Big Boy and Long Boy, in describing Hudson pickups. Are these 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton?

The owners manual says that the serial number is on the engine block, and on a plate on the passenger door A-pillar, above the upper door hinge. If the engine is not original, and the plate is missing, is there any other location where the vehicle serial number might be?

What literature (shop manuals, etc. ) is available, and from whom?

What are the differences between the 1946 and 1947 Hudson pickups?

I've always thought that these were the best looking pickups, ever.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Someone will step in soon to "fine tune" these answers, and I don't claim to be an expert, but here goes:

In 46-7 the only pickup available was 3/4 ton.

Most sheet metal and drive train parts were the same as the passenger cars (except the cab, bed and rear fenders of course, and such things as HD springs). Many pre-war Hudson pickups had choice between long and short bed. Doors were from 1941, didn't have the 'flare out' at bottom, as the passenger cars did.

Lots of literature is available from the Hudson club.

Little if any diff. between 46 & 47 trucks

Not sure, but serial number may be stamped on pass. side frame (just aft of front axle) and top of differential case -- at least it's there in earlier Hudsons.

front fenders 46-47 pickup only. pickup frame has extra reinforcements. "bigboy" only one available in 46-47. front hood/grill front emblem different colors between 46 and 47, only difference I know. 46-47 pickups had wing windows, 41 and earlier did not, thus doors from earlier truck won't work. just stripped and powdercoated my 41 pickup frame, no serial number anywhere on it that I can find. parts and service manuals are easy to get. brand new repo and original. ebat best or HET club for repo books. can get sales brouchures on ebay. I have had several of these trucks, will help where can. Jon B. correct on other differences between truck and car. front bumper different between car and truck, truck uses 41 type bumper.I have some cabs, frames, beds, parts for sale.

I have found the serial number stamped on the rear right side top frame and on the rear right side axle. With the longer wheel base the driveshaft is different from the passenger cars, along with running boards. Many of the items that were in passenger cars were options for the trucks.
  • Lance is right on the serial number on the rear axle unless it has been swaped out. Also on the top of frame right side just behind the axle. I believe the front fenders are the same except for the rear bottom inside corner where the car door has the half moon out to fit the bottom door where the pickup fender does not. Believe the doors are the same as the 4 door car except for the added on piece on the cars to cover the running board. May be wrong on some of this.

sure enough!! there is my serial number stamped right where you said it was!! right side top of frame behind rear axle almost to end of frame. learn something new every day! running boards are the hard thing to find original and straight for these trucks, but they are reproduced.

Thanks. I just won the bid for a Hudson Mechanical Procedure Manual for 42-47.

    Good information.

First thing I have to do, is paint it.

I've been following the sale of that truck for years. Good to see that it has finally found a home.-
Me, too. It didn't sell, I'm quite sure, because of the color. And the Chevy 6. But it is a solid truck.

It snowed in Salt Lake City last week, so I still haven't picked up the Big Ugly. We had storms here in Tejas, right up until yesterday evening. I spent the afternoon rewiring my trailer, and installing LED taillights.and tomorrow after work, I'll start packing the wheel bearings. It is a good 20 ft flatbed. I hauled a 1942 Buick Limited from Escondido, CA to Texas, twice, with it. I think the Hudson weighs about half what the Series 90 does.
The running boards had a rubber coating/cover. You can find replacments for that (and a lot of other Hudson stuff) at K-Gap.
Those boards appear to be a bit short (?), but it is a bit hard to tell from a photo. Did they come with the truck, or get them somewhere else?

Thanks for the link. $330 for rubber mats, they are now on the list.
    Good luck :)
I look forward to seeing some more pictures of your truck, as you progress with it. You can see pictures of mine on the link below -

I'll post what I can. I really need to change the color of that truck. I had already looked at your site, right before I registered here. Blue truck with black fenders. I also printed out a HET membership form, so I can join.
  • The grill pictured is incomplete and I wonder if you dont have part of 2 running boards. these are too short. They go from front to rear fender and bolt to both. as well as to the cab and running board supports that are not shown. You may have one board that has been cut into.

I haven't got the truck yet. That picture was sent to me by the seller, and I had to resize it, to meet the size limit here on jpgs. Just one more thing to learn about. I'll check it out when I get it. Pictures will be posted here.

Now, I gotta go pack the wheel bearings on my two axle trailer.
