rear axle differential overhaul
hello i am trying to search the archives for any threads on the rear axles for my hudson pickup i need to replace the seals and the gasket between the two 1/2`s of the differential i also want to inspect the bearings but i am having some issues getting the assembly separated .
my motors manual tells me what i need to do but its not clear on how to accomplish the proceedure .
i am at the point where the rear end is on the shop floor and the drive pinion nut is off the seal and bearing are out the 10 or so 9/16 nuts are removed but the two halves are not wanting to slip apart . and im not sure how the axles are supposed to slide out i have the nuts off of seal retainers from the backing plates . i really dont want to break anything any links to better instructions would be greatly appreciated - best regards G H

Gustav, sounds like all you need to do is remove the axles (or slide them out a few inches) to get the rest of the differential apart. Block the axle assembly up on each side so there's clearance from the floor to put the drums on loosely. You might want to remove the square key from the end of the axle at this point, to let the drum slide easily on the tapered axle end. OK, put a drum on one axle, loosely, and put the axle end nut on only a third of the way, leaving 1/4" to 1/2" space between nut and end of the drum. Now you're going to use the drum as an impact "puller" for the axle. Sit down at the end of the axle, slide the drum all the way on, then sharply pull it toward you so it hits the nut. Repeat this several times and you should see the outer race of the axle bearing coming out of the axle housing. Once it's out, you can pull the axle and bearing out of the housing. Repeat on the other side. The next recommended step is to buy the appropriate Hudson shop manual from the club store so you'll have all the details next time. LOL.0
