Manifold Heat: worth fixing?

On my 49 Comm 8 the manifold heat has been "decommisioned". Is it worth trying to restore? Could I build a new valve? is there a source for the thermo-spring? Without an example I even know what it should look like. I assume that currently it is equivalent to being in the "open" position. Do I need to concern myself with fixing this condition?

I wouldn't fix this. The carb gets plenty of heat, especially since it is mounted on the exhaust manifold. I have found the heat riser to be a real problem,on splasher six and eights. I have seen the heat riser stuck shut on many, many engines and then when taken apart,I find the subsequent damage. I have found the rear 3 or 4 cylinders, burnt up!! Modern fuel= Extra heat anyway. We are not driving these in the colder month anymore-well most aren't.

ON TARGET AS USUAL, messed up it will cost you and all it really does is warm things up faster ,

  • I cannot determine if my 47 212 six heat riser is open or shut. If I take the carburator off, will I be able to tell?? Thanks, this is a great forum. Bob

NOPE, only way I know for sure is take it out and that has to be done with some care as to not twist off old rusted bolts, SOAK THEM GOOD, and peck on them a bit ,helps get the rust dissolver in , then like clutch guy said, GET RID OF IT !!~ BUD

Find someone with a spare manifold, have a close look to see how it works, and you will be able to work out if it is open or shut. There have been previous threads on this topic which will also give you your answer. Regards, Barry
  • Thanks when I slow down a bit, I'll pursue those threads. Too much to do rite now w/grandkids, since they closed (cause of the flu) the daycare for my granddaughter. Will have to rise early, drive 70 miles to take grandson to school, and keep the granddaughter. But I try to read the latest posts daily to stay up. Ya'll guys are really great keeping the rest of us up to date and better informed. Have to read the posts just like reading the daily paper. Thanks, Bob
