Fuel pump!!!
The %%^&9^^(@!-ing fuel pump on my '37 Terraplane took a dump this morning! I replaced it about three years ago, and it has MAYBE 100 miles on it! I need one right this very second that works!
The car ran fine yesterday, and it was getting fuel just fine. I checked every possible thing (car runs now with fuel poured in the carb, blew out the fuel line, emptied the fuel pump bowl to see if it would refill, etc), and it's definitely the pump.
Anyone have one ready to ship? I'll pay a reasonable price for a pump and shipping!

Sorry, don't have one, but while you're at it, buy two (just in case). Have you tried Dave Kostansek & Tim Cheney, yet? That would be my first try:

Tim has one in stock, and it's MINE!0

Before you give up on it, take the center bolt off that holds the bowl on and check whether the fine screen is plugged.
If not, consider getting a new diaphragm or a rebuild kit from Tim/Dave or http://www.maritimedragracing.com/then_and_now_automotive.htm amd a can of carb cleaner and do it yourself.0 -

Good for you!0 -
I looked at the pump screen and all that. The pump won't suck for squat. Emptied the pump bowl to see if it would draw anything - nothing.0

Won't suck well, won't suck bad . . . just doesn't suck at all . . . which sucks!
Probably diaphragm is cracked or no longer seals properly. I think you did the right thing. Don't throw your pump assembly away, though . . . it's still re-buildable. If nothing else, send it to Dave and Tim so THEY can re-build it if you have no interest in doing it yourself.0 -
Dave needs your old pump as a core deposit, otherwise it would cost more.0

I'm well aware of that fact.0

okay......why not go to an electric fuel pump???.....0 -
Why? These things work great when you get a modern material diaphragm in there that won't get eaten up by the alky.0

Because I do not want one, that is why.
I put a spare electric pump on just long enough to verify that the factory unit was Tango Uniform, then made the call for a replacement.0 -
Smasher-
You'll find that here on the main board, most of us will go out of our way to keep a good, clean original car as "original" as possible. While an electric pump might be added back at the tank as a "helper", or to assist in preventing vapor lock, the original mechanical pump would be a must.
Heavy modifications and the conversations that go along with that will go over much better in the "street rod" forum section of the Hudson board.0 -

Hey man, didn't mean to "ruffle any feathers".......just an alternative. I wouldn't believe a change to an electric fuel pump would be a "heavy modification" or would it be a necessity on a "street rod".....Original parts are great....If your in the position to find them and spend the money for them. I myself on the other hand own 9 antique vehicles, and I guess everyone of them including my own 49' supersix would "have to" fall into these categories of "heavily modified" and "street cars".....0 -
Maybe my post was a little too harsh . . . didn't mean it that way. I come from a hot rod background, myself. Actually, more of just a car guy. Modifieds, hot rods, street rods, classics, rat rods, customs, original survivors, you name it. It's always been my belief that if you listen to the car you love, she'll tell you what she's meant to be.
But on this board, you'll find that the majority of it's users are faithful restorers of Hudsons.0 -

oh......wow, I'm impressed Chilton. I was expecting to have some hate mail when I logged back in!....It was a little harsh, But maybe I came off sounding like a rat rodder. I will explain this much. You can visit 460ford.com any time and find me there. Very much a performance oriented person, and right now the day of the big fords are upon us. Check it out if your doubtful. Anyway, I absolutely love old cars. When I bought my 49' supersix sedan it was definately a love affair. Its in decent shape for its age and location. It was all intact minus the headliner, and seats. It even has the original am radio........that works!!!......all the lights worked also. Underhood, the 262 runs good, but the wiring is a rats nest so to speak. It was missing the radiator, and the fuel tank is gone. After combing the internet for restoration parts, I realized they didn't make ANYTHING AFTERMARKET for them.....Almost anything, What I did find was more money that I wanted to throw at it. So, to get it driveable, aftermarket fuel cell with elect. pump, front and rear seats out of a lincoln town car, dodge radiator, and a few other small parts. After a while, I built an entire wiring harness with updated fuse box and thats about it. other than that its all still there. To me, its not the idea of using non original parts, its the idea of I did it myself and cheaply and will give me peace of mind. Like I said though, If I could afford to completely restore this car, I most definately would, but right now it never fails to start, I sit more comfortably in my lincoln seats than I do in the wifes tahoe........and I look good in it too!! lol!!......Next time I'll know better than to suggest something like that!......thanks. That must have good mileage!0

No worries, Smasher. We're on the same page. First thing I do with an old car is rip out all the old, frayed, worn-out wiring and replace it. I think it's one of the smartest moves one can make.
Your car sounds great. Afterall, a man's ( or woman's) car is supposed to be a reflection of one's self, not fashioned from another's image.
The '52 Hornet in my avatar has had a few modern upgrades: 12V conversion, all new wiring stem to stern, negative ground, alternator, modern Heat/AC. Last thing I want to do here in the deep South is run around in a car with no AC. We've got about 9 months of HOT!
If you get the Hudson bug like most of us here on the board, you'll probably be looking for your next Hudson to restore or modify. LOL!Keep in mind that parts ARE available. You just have to know where to look and this forum and the Hudson Club are both invaluable in that regard. I'm in the middle of a '52 Hornet Convertible restoration and if it weren't for the Hudson folks I network with on a daily basis, I wouldn't have even tried to tackle the project. They have helped me make my restoration a success thus far, no doubt about it. No, you can't call 1-800-Send-me-a-Hudson-Part, but the friendships and camraderie is unlike any other marque following I've ever encountered. Hudson people are simply the best, IMO.
Want to know how crazy I am? Attached is a pic of the car I took 4-1/2 years to build and then promptly sold it so I could concentrate on HUDSONS.
I'll check out your website!0 -
Ya know what? This type of discussion is what keeps me coming back to this forum. A little dissagreement to allow for both parties to give opinion and a decent rapport ending in an education for everybody with no name-calling.
I truly believe that all the other forums that I frequent would have had guys trading barbs and pointing fingers.
I donno, I've been on the road a lot the last couple of weeks and maybe I've just heard too much talk radio. A lot of folks seem to be having a lot of success being just plain-ole mean.
The saying "you meet the nicest folks in Hudsons" is indeed true...slim:)0 -

Back on-topic here...I sent the core to Kostansek last Thursday with payment. I figured two weeks before I'd see the new pump, right? It arrived the following Tuesday!!! WOW! Terrific service from Dave and Tim!:):)0
