Oil in rebuilt engine

What oil should be used in my newly rebuilt engine? I've been using SAE 30 non-detergent which was supposedly used by the prior owner as well.

Should I be using any additives, ie zinc?

Thanks in advance.

  • I should leave this alone - but why would anyone want to use non-detergent oil in a newley rebuilt engine? Norm:confused:

Likewise - why would anyone want to use SAE 30 in a splasher? I have used a premium multigrade HD oil in my '33 terraplane ever since I changed the oil the first time (after I dropped the pans and cleaned them).

  • I have often wondered why Hudson speced non-detergent to begin with . Must have been a valide reason. Any chemists out there ?
  • because that is all that was available back then. Don't use old tech oil in your car when the modern multigrade oils are so much more advanced and will do a better job for you.

Was just being inquisitive. Likely so when the splasher was invented { I wasn't there } but not so in the late 40's 50's that I do remember. There was as much controversy then in general as there is on this forum now. Reckon maybe I'll call LEE DAVIS, the old Hudson dealer here ,He's 94-95 or there about and ought to know, yeah he remembers ALL of it and loves to talk HUDSON .
