46 Overdrive tranny

You're asking if you can remove the overdrive portion of the 1946 transmission and bolt it to the back of the standard 1939 transmission? I'd say "no."
Or, are you asking if it's possible to replace the standard 1939 (non overdrive) transmission with a complete 1946 overdrive transmission? In that case I believe the answer is "yes", though you may have to use the later transmission's bellhousing, and not the 1939 one. (Verify this.)
Of course, since the 1946 transmission had a column shift linkage, you won't be able to put a floor shifter into it.
If you were indeed asking if the entire 1946 transmission (tranny + overdrive) could be substituted, then why would it matter about the 1939's altered floor shift? You'd be removing the entire 1939 tranmission anyway.0 -

Thanks
Yes, it will bolt to a '39 212, but it will most likely require the bell housing from the '46. The biggest problem this swap presents is that you will have install the engine and transmission as a single unit. If you have a problem with the trans or clutch you will have to remove the entire assembly!

The change from upstairs to floor shift on a '39 or '40 was simply a case of changing the lid for an earlier model. However, this is not interchangeable with the late transmission ('41 onwards) so you will have to go with the upstairs shifting mechanism. I believe there is a clearance problem with the govenor on the later overdrives as well, which will have to be looked at. My understanding is that the governor will not clear the chassis member, and if using this unit you will have to go to a manual switch.

The intention here is to replace the entire 39 transmission with the entire 46
overdrive transmission and if possible retain the use of the floor shift.
Based on the response it appears that this swap can be done by:
1. removing the engine and replacing the engine and O/D trans as a unit.
2. refitting the shifting mechanism to upstairs on the column. ( where it originally was on this 39 model) before being "altered " to the floor"
3. Potentially swapping out the governor with a mechanical switch to clear the frame.
4. Using the 39 bell housing on the 46 O/D tranny.
Has anyone actually done this swap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again to all who respond and have responded so far.0 -
Yes, I have this arrangement on my 38 Hudson. All is true.0

Hmmmmm.....
So, Allan, you can actually use the earlier bellhousing on the '46? Did you use your '38 bellhousing? What year trans. are you using in the '38? How "late" an overdrive will fit the '30's cars? You've told me all this before, and of course I've forgotten.
(I realize that the '52 and up, Borg-Warner, "2-levers" won't fit, due to their length, which is a shame, since they can easily be modified for a floor shifter.)0 -
A related question--is there somewhere the way to convert a 46 single lever non-OD trans to floor shift?0

Ivanz-yes but it is all custom work. A shifter with a push button in the middle. Using the button to shift into low-reverse gate-custom all the way,but possible0
