I've used Harkin Machine Shop in South Dakota for three different eight-cylinder Hudson overhauls, the latest just in the past few months. He does great work. He'll do the mains in a semi-finished undersize, ready for line boring. For the rods, get your crank ground first, then give him the journal diameters and the clearance you want. You'll get them exactly as specified. He advertises in Hemmings, or just Google the shop name.
  • Park W Give us an idea of cost per rod if you can.
  • Thanks guys, now anybody, before I mess up ,how do you remove the end main bearing caps, drill out the packing ? Have never tore down a 212, any tips ? Any place to get a detailed step by step manual ?---BUD
  • You need a puller for the main bearings. The shop manual (or some do) will have a picture of the puller being used. A good machine shop can easly make up a puller. The one I have was made in the shop at Gilbertsville KY. dam back in 1941 or 42. The club store has reprints of most of the manuals and they really do come in handy. Dont drill out the packing unless some one has done what Uncle Josh found where some one had filled the packin holes with lead.
  • I was looking at a way to make a puller, looks like you could pull it out by the 2 little pan bolt holes in the cap. Puller to do that would not be hard to make. Just leave the packing in and pull it out, right ? BUD

I just got the bill for a complete rebuild of my 46 C8 engine from Harkin Machine. Terry Harkin charged $48 each for the rod bearings and $42 each for the mains. The cost to line bore the mains was $200.

Incidentally, Terry Harking is an absolute prince of a fellow to work with and I would recommend him without reservation.

You will be putting a lot of stress on those small bolts going into the caps. Don't use some bolts you find lying around...do yourself a favor and buy some new Grade 8 bolts.

I made a simple puller using a piece of strap iron, two new bolts, and was able to pry the caps off.
